What are some of the most underrated books you've encountered? For instance outside of /lit I had never heard of the Book of Disquiet among others. I'm looking for new books to add to my lists. I'll start with Burmese Days by Orwell. It's easy, but also his best work IMO.

Interesting. I'll have to look it up. I really liked Homage to Catalonia, and thought Down and Out in Paris and London was worthwhile as well.

A lot of stuff from publishers like Dalkey Archive, NYRB (and perhaps Dedalus?) would be considered great but underrated work.
The Snow Leopard and At Play in the Fields of the Lord seems to get all the attention from Matthiesen fans. This little beauty about Cayman Islands fishermen is underappreciated.

Orwell's biography and essays are pretty good but his actual novels are pretty shite.
I'm going with for underrated novels: Petersburg, The Transylvania trilogy, War With the Newts, Journey by Moonlight, America, Journey to the End of the Night, The Man Without Qualities, Arthur Machen's short stories.

Can thoroughly recommend Journey by Moonlight, /lit/ as all fuck, contains the coyest description of anal sex known to man. V funny.

Also some really nice scenes of walking through Rome when the main character is being obsessive about his old friend stealing his watch. Gets a little edgy at times though when they talk about death, especially in the beginning and they do that play thing.
Lots of people read Master and Margerita but hardly anyone reads Bulgakov's other stuff which is also incredible, Fatal Eggs, Black Snow and Country Doctor's Notebook (which has a story that reeks of Kafka) are incredible.

Thanks for the input, these are what I'm looking for, not too interested in modern or recently published novels so journey by moonlight really fits the bill.

Hope you enjoy, no idea why Szerb isn't talked about more on /lit/. I find his material a little soothing and cozy as this anon says >>8290186 be prepared though a lot of his novels and short stories follow the same patterns and formula.
Also speaking of underrated Hungarian novels, I've been interested in checking out Prae, since I heard it was their equivalent of Proust's In Search of Lost Time which I thought was The Transylvania Trilogy but apparently not.
