O'Connor really is a better short story writer than a novelist, but her novels are good. I like The Violent Bear It Away.

It's not that it's a depressing story, it's that it was a genuinely funny, at least to me, book with some serious themes for the first 80%, and then he literally murders that guy, blinds himself, and dies a slow, painful death while unknowingly making that old lady die alone in love with him . Also, the way Enoch's story ends is a super downer too, in a more subtle way. This is my first O'Conner story, are the rest like this?
