How hard are Benjamin's works in german? My german is pretty rusty since I haven't used it for a couple of years. I am really interested in his works though, but the only complete anthologies are in the original language.

Also, can someone recommend me some relatively accessible literature in german? I am going to uni next year and would be nice to have my third language freshened up.

Well they're pretty much incomprehensible in English, so you can't do much worse in German.

That's what I gathered.
Currently going through Den Begriff Der Geschichte, the original text in one pdf and translation in the other. Not as bad as I feared, but it is going to be really long, tiresome reading. Would be easier to read in translation.

But already from going through a few paragraphs it is apparent that certain nuances simply get lost in translation.

No rec's on good german lit?

The Kafk.

It's been quite some time since I read them but I think Joseph Roth and Max Frisch use pretty simple vocabulary and not too extravagant grammar.

Just read Hesse until you can do fine. Siddhartha is very simple and then after two you should be aight to read Kafka or Mann or someit

Hesse it is! I have Demian laying around somewhere.

The Kafk can get pretty crazy with his grammar and long sentences. Hardly more accessible than Benjamin.

Will check out your other rec's, thanks senpai.

Hijacking this thread with another recommendation, if you want something that's not too extravagant and complex, read Fallada. "Alone in Berlin" is a great postwar novel that got rediscovered only a few years ago. I'd also consider Remarque as "easy" when it comes to digestible prose. Oh and if you want someone contemporary, Heinz Strunk is great, very hilarious author and should be easy to read. Although I'm not sure if his works got translated at all. Good luck OP.

I read The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction during high-school, it was pretty straightforward. I mean come on.

OP, here.

Yeh, I find him relatively straightforward in translation. I've mostly read his essays.

Harder in the original language, though. His sentence structures get to me. But he's not unpenetrable, I just need to start using the language properly again.
