Candle in the Dark was surprisingly good at checkmating atheists on shit they believed that was goofy, instead of just wanking to the choir that god wasn't real for 200 pages.
>>

The "Dragon in my Garage" chapter is pretty great at that.

But he spends an inordinate length of time "countering" the religious argument that "God is real because millions of people have religious experiences" with the equally true "Aliens are real because millions of people have had abduction/visitation experiences". It's practically the entire middle of the book.

It's fascinating but it really dates the book to the late 80's and early 90's when people talked about grays and abduction and out of body experiences a lot more.

Was about to make one on Wodehouse's Jeeves because Hugh Laurie is screaming to be put into What I Got, but just found out that he actually played Jeeves in an adaptation. Must have been the first actor they too thought about back then, given Georges in Blackadder.

>In the television documentary Fry and Laurie Reunited (2010), upon reminiscing about their involvement in the series, it was revealed that they were initially reluctant to play the part of Jeeves and Wooster but decided to do so in the end because they felt no one else would do the parts justice.

was corn even a crop in ancient rome?
>>
>>8216827
Nope. That's the joke.

Corn is native to the Americas so it wasn't until the 15th century or so that it arrived in Europe
>>
>>8216827

Corn was the word for grain, like wheat and barley. After the discovery of maize by europeans they also called it corn and the name stuck.
>>
>>8216780
the english translation uses "corn". "corn" in british english can often be used to describe any cereal grain. Caesar would have actually been referring to wheat or some other grain in his writing.

the actual joke here is that the reader expected an exciting writing and tale by Caesar about the Gallic War, but instead mostly got countless descriptions of grain supplies and inventory. "i read commentaries of the gallic war, i expected war, conquest, and scenes like the film gladiator, but all i got was grain (corn)"

because the english text uses "corn" the creator of the image used a picture of maize, which is commonly called "corn" in north america. the creator may have not realized his mistake about maize vs. corn, or may have done it on purpose, adding layers to the joke.

eventually a troll/bait reply was written around the fact that maize would not have been found in europe at the time, and that "corn" is a poor translation of grain and so on. it will likely be posted shortly, as it has become copypasta and this entire thing is now /lit/ meme.

Damn it, do we have to give away all the secrets?
It's better to watch ppl writhe in confused agony.
>>
>>8216947
was tired of seeing retards miss the entire point of the original joke, which is funny in it's own right, if you've read the commentaries. they only think it has to do with the corn/maize thing because of the pasta.
