I read it at 16 and was scared to death of being caught reading it. I thouhgt the ending was pretty soap opera tier. I was very closeted myself so I could definitely relate to the protagonist, even if he was an unpleasant character.

That's not how it ended nor was it the first boy he fell in love with. The novel starts with him doing much the same thing to another boy foreshadowing his relationship with Hella and Giovanni

Baldwin's great.

Not his best. Even Baldwin says so somewhere. I suppose it's groundbreaking in some ways, but it really is soap opera tier.
