"I’ve encountered two types of people who are having trouble adapting to the field. First, there are those who bridle at the left-political conformity of English and who voice complaints familiar from the culture wars. But a second group suffers from a malaise without a name; socialization to the discipline has left them with unaccountable feelings of confusion, inhibition and loss."

>what are essays
that was a good article, i read it when it came out. it's true, a lot of literary criticism these days is basically anti-human. but in niche-ier fields, like medievalist literature, you can spot enthusiasm that shines. it'll pass.

By cutting off its gangrene-infected limb-- Gender Studies.
Or just by not being so incredibly left-wing.
It's deeply rooted in federal politics. Colleges are bound to lame affirmative action and equality policies which basically provide a shelter to far-left nonsenses. Professors, whether right-wing or even moderately left-leaning, have lost any authority to the administration and could not change the situation if they would. A cancerous far-left student who felt offended, or “triggered” or whatever can turn to the dean like it's a legal court and easily have him by his side. He barely has the choice. The university should free itself first then we may think about an inside solution to the leftist academia.
Impossible without religion. The humanities are for making you a better person, for tending the garden of your mind, heart and soul; without religion, that means getting good boy points for the current year.
