You may have a large general vocabulary /lit/, but how much specific terminology do you know and how many do you have to look up?

who /mayotransnigger/ here?
>>8191525
Virgin here. I didn't even know that there were different types of hymen... Cribriform hymen reminds me of when you google trypophobia.
It depends on your interests. It's a terrible idea to save up these pictures, create a deck on Anki and managing to remember it. It must be coherent with your personality so you have a real understanding—which means a better and wiser use—and a non-flowery prose poisoned with dozens of words from unrelated lexical fields. You should use a medical terminology if you're actually a physician.

Or, of course, you're writing a character with said specialist knowledge. I hate it when authors write characters who are experts in field they themselves are obviously ignorant of.
This reminds me of that passage in Underworld where the reform school teacher tells the young protagonist about all the different parts of a shoe. I never really understood why he did that.
I constantly have to look up pieces of (what I consider) obscure clothing. Why do authors have to use half a dozen different words for simple things like cardigans and jackets? do I just have poor knowledge of fashion or do writers use obscure words to seem more modern and sophisticated?
>>8191945
When writers go into detail about specialized fields do they pick something they're already an expert at or do they pick something first and do extensive research on it?
>>8191962
it's usually something they already have more than passing (usually pretty solid) interest/knowledge of, but of course authors will research a bit more in depth.
>>8191872
I knew eight out of those ten. Feels good, man.

>no cocking piece
