Going through my inbox from November last year to find something my bank sent me. I found an email from a guy I was friends with in highschool. Yes, they do laugh several times throughout where it is unwarranted and he's being dead serious. If it makes you feel better I'm in a similar situation but I'm going back to school as I never finished. Ive spent the last year working in a mail room which includes shredding old law documents for entire work-months sometimes. However I get to listen to podcasts and think by myself for the entire day which is pretty okay. Well in terms of strict quality: Swann's Way was the best, books 2 & 3 are pretty good, book 4 & 5 are a bit lacking and book 6 is pretty good but I don't really prefer to look at it that way.
I feel you kind of have to submit to his verbosity and his vision of life if you want to really experience it; maintaining a heavily critical eye throughout the whole work would not make it an enjoyable read.

I've been taking them pretty slow so they've sort of been a microcosm within my own life for a long time.
If you're only in it for the quality lit, you get most of the top shelf prose in Swann's Way

I saw the vanity, the merciless search for truth in fantasy, and the narcissism of being the arbiter of said truth. We saw the authors in much the same way as the sign-holding homeless, who harass commuters at red lights. Everyone has something to say, and they grovel to say it, but we too shared that mania, and when we looked outward it was our turn to prostrate in the muck.

Keep in mind this is more about the experience of writing, I haven't mentioned the act. One can either participate in the endless cycle of incestuous flattery, or not. The outcome is more or less the same. After locking oneself in a small room and avoiding all human contact, with the only explanation being that one is doing something that they cannot and never could do. When the inner critic remains unsatisfied one wonders where one's friends are.
