The book's about a monkey who says we should all live in the woods and just shit wherever you feel like it.

its 40% really shitty and grossly oversimplified anthropology, 60% "this doesn't work and we need to be different" with just a dash of noble savage thrown in for good measure. for the most part, the narrator is supposed to be a stand in for the reader which means most of this book is spent hand holding you towards conclusions and then trying to make you feel stupid for not arriving at them on your own, complete with the narrator at several points literally stupefied by the "mind blowing" superficial revelations he has been shown. I felt like the author was very satisfied with how smart he is while writing it.

what really stuck out to me about Ishmael is when he says the anecdote about watermelons.
Basically, if a watermelon patch goes uneaten, the fruit rots but it's not a waste.
For one, the seeds return to the earth and begins the cycle again. Second, because the world has an abundance.
we must take this as an analogy for our consumerist lives. nothing we do or consume should be a waste. we can repurpose everything, including our time.

It was the most preachy, obvious shit I have ever read. I stopped after 50 pages. Easily my least favorite book.

The sequel was better.
