I read the part/chapter once, then pick up my notebook and a pen to take notes while skimming what I've just read. When there's secondary material available I read it before the skimming part. It works very well for me.

My process is as follows:

1) Read the book once at a leisurely pace, to my heart's content - dog-earring pages of import, or which contain passages that resonate with me.

2) Reread the work in question, singling out the most important passages/themes/quotations to pontificate upon in-depth, usually in the form of essays/aphorisms/etc.
