As much as /lit/ will rag on me for saying this, it's substance, which doesn't mean character writing, plot, or even themes, but is a dimension through which a book's inner nature is observable.

The most clear way to explain this would be to think of written works themselves as people and ask yourself if a given piece of writing is someone you'd care to know.
