Unfortunately, David Foster Wallace has a much better handle on writing interesting things than I do, so it would be poor fan fiction if I tried to finish his work for him.

I like accounting, guys! My dad was an accountant. Every day when he got home, he would tell me about his work. All of these things about how companies work, and stories from places he audited. I found it fascinating, and now I'm going for an accounting degree. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, huh?
Besides, someone has to do it, right?

Another idea; Think of Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus". Pushing a boulder up a hill for it to roll back down forever may be monotonous, painful, and pointless, but as human beings, we can decide how we choose to feel about things. You need not despair. We can feel joy if we WANT to!
"One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Pic related is my school! NY is fun.
>>
>>8072428
Everything that you would expect is worth reading.
The Scarlet Letter
Brave New World
Sherlock Holmes
Tortilla Flat
The Pearl
The Great Escape
Anything by Heinlein (I prefer Strangers in a Strange Land)
Silmarillion
In Cold Blood
Forget "The Third Man" book; watch the film instead, it's a really good film noir.
>>
>>8071937
Dude, besides the manga, the books you have are all pretty well known for being great reads. Don't let /lit/ discourage you from reading because your books aren't obscure enough for them. You have good taste, even if it's mainstream. As long as you're reading, I'm happy.
>>
>>8072230
What do you use to hold your books, may I ask? Do you pile them in a stack on the floor? I thought about doing that, because it looks cool, but then my books would get all dusty!

I'm getting into accounting myself. I've been working at a small firm for the past 4 months. I really like it, and it's interesting work imo.

I went into it with no intentions, but now I might go for my CPA designation since I already have an undergrad. I even bought a used accounting textbook I've been working through.

I always had the misconception that it is boring work, and while it can be tedious if you can see the bigger picture it's really neat.

Do you have the 150 hours? If not, I wholeheartedly recommend taking difficult accounting or taxation graduate courses, and not underwater basketweaving courses just to get the hours. You'll learn a lot more about the profession, and work towards a CPA! Two birds and one stone.

Also digital content tempts me to pirate far too much and I find that lately pirated content seems to give me very little enjoyment.

I laughed when I saw an entire shelf of stephen king books.

then i saw the second and laughed.

I saw the fourth and stopped laughing.

The Barnes and Noble Glitter edition book collection.

the video game replicas

a short swiffer tucked in above the """adult""" comics and the Heroes:the tv show: the book

two shelves of terry brooks, some robert jordan, game of thrones, harry potter, eragon.

the mugs that I can't identify but are probably harry potter or from a video game

book ends that look like stray pieces of garbage

it's a shame the picture is low quality. I'd love to see the rest of the collection

3. Don't mistake me. I'm not praising his taste, I obviously think it's tacky.

Besides the manga, it's been about six years since I started my collection. Pic is what it was like back then.

My backlog's usually about a third of them now, including things like the reference works and anthologies (most of which I'll probably never read the whole way through). I spent several years abusing my university's very great inter-library loan system, so there's several hundred I've read but don't own. Most of my book buying lately has been picking up the ones I really loved but read through the library, plus kid's books.

What's in your backlog right now?

Shelves fill up really quickly if you hit up antiquaries, flea markets, that kind of stuff, or maybe they're phasing out books at your university and you can just come and pick them up for free.
The sheer amount of new books I see on /lit/ almost has me believe everyone's either a richfag or still living at home because the only new books I buy are the ones for my courses and the ones I'm gifted, everything else I find for cheap around the city.
Granted, you probably won't find exactly 'that' book you want, but you'll find plenty of classics anyway (I found the collected works of Goethe and Lessing for free) and you'll end up with a diverse library that doesn't look like a meme.

I haven't read it yet. Read M Train though, and that's killer. She made me feel a lot while saying very little. She's just a normal lady, no blown up superstar, and she makes it feel good to get up in the afternoon and eat some brown toast with olive oil. Then again, she also is a superstar and toured with Dylan and is a furious Blakean and the M Train has value for that and her reflections and devotion to literature.

Top left is leatherbounds and first editions, moving through to fairytales & old horror, then some Angela Carter, a bit of SF and books on writing.
Then there's a Ian Banks section followed by Borges, Calvino, Pynchon. I think of that as a "proven good authors" section. Then the "classic writers on drugs" followed by two assorted literature sections, then poetry and erotica. Middle shelves start with non-fiction then go to random-lit-leading-to-modern-shit-lit, second from bottom is large hardbacks and the paris review, then Pratchett & Adams before the golden age pulp SF, more assorted lit leading in to cyberpunk and non-fiction cyberpunk. Bottom shelf is books on Celts, then comic books, books on alternate ecologies with some Lovecraft, books on mythology then books on anthropology. Not much of a system but I don't really care.

I wish people still wrote porn novels for men. I look at the list of author's names on amazon in the erotica ebooks section and try to spot the guys, there's not very many. I wish you could filter by gender but that would probably be too "problematic"

Girls just suck at writing edgy porn in my opinion. By and large at least. I read part of one book that was supposed to have some good rapey bits but the captured beauty falls in love with her jailer after like five minutes. Where's the fun in that?

>>8099260

I have that Keri Hume book, is it good?

Just Kids is beautiful. Read it ASAP, and then pick up M Train.

"Books" is one point, not one for each individual book. That would obviously render the point system meaningless.
>>
>>8101076
Oh, I guess I'm just 1 point then..
>>
>>8101065
pretty good altogether, stephen king seems misplaced there. do you plan on buying the entire rougon-macquarts?
>>
>>8101056
>gigantic book right in the middle
put it on one of the ends you barbarian
>>
>>8101121
yes, the next book i m going to buy is "germinal"
>>
>>8101169
but i'm also trying to begin to read the whole " comédie humaine" from Balzac
>>
>>8101191
have you read lost illusions? I'd rec that to anyone. I even bought my mom a copy, but she found Lucien too insufferable to finish it
>>
>>8101065

>Stephen King
>>
>>8101191
>>8101169
good luck with that. from what i've read and heard, reading the whole comedie humaine is not really worth it, there are some excellent novels like illusions perdues, pere goriot and eugenie grandet, for example -- parisian and provincial scenes are the best --, but obviously subpar stories can be found too, hell, ce sont des 146 volume. thus as there isn't a narrative unity between all of them i can only find the 'reading them all' enterprise to be an exercise of vanity.

the rougon macquart is more doable imo, even though some volumes are quite underwhelming (like the 1st la fortune des rougon). therese raquin and paris [from trois villes] shits on some rougon-macquart books

>>

"Cares"? Who knows? Why would anyone care? This is just something people do for fun, I think. People like to post pictures and other people like to bitch about. I didn't realise people were supposed to care about it. Maybe they would care about it in Nofunland where you're from.
>>
>>8101892
Yep, there's more than just me here though. I do "strange" literature and early Japanese detective fiction, there's another anon who seemed to do something with colonialism/political Japanese fiction.
