i enjoy reading him from time to time, knowing full well his stories aren't great. the last book of his i read was Joyland. it's a quick two or three day read that satiates some inner desire to read fiction intended for mass audiences. i think one of his books a year quells that compulsion. however, On Writing is a stellar primer for aspiring novelists, as well as a good short memoir on his career and that tragic accident he suffered. most of his novels, if not all, do fall into the mindless reading category. the older ones are more enjoyable, though.
