I like to consider it as if the actions Elliot took afterwards had never occurred. A stand alone piece of fiction, satirizing certain aspects of modern pop culture and the pursuit of pleasure and love. damn it ellie. Why though? It's a great character arc.
He should really be a poster kid for the fact that childhood emotional and otherwise neglect can and does exist among the """"rich"""" as well. In fact the wealth only makes it harder for him to understand what's going on.
