In the middle of the 20th century, literary theorists came up with "death of the author" while film theorists came up with "auteur theory."

Why did literature move away from the importance of the author at the same time film moved towards it?

because they knew that film is an inferior medium that's limited by commercial and monetary issues so film critics pretended that the director was the "writer" so that film could have the prestige of literature.

This.

There's a kernel of truth to this, but it's incredibly reductionist. There have existed hundreds of film studios that were not obstructed by financial constraint and considered artistic resonance to be their ultimate goal rather than profit. Today in the age of independent filmmaking, there are more than ever. Additionally, the publishing industry is incredibly commercial and always has been--a great story can come from anywhere, but only those with financial potential will earn attention from a major firm.

The director is one part of many, and his influence has often been exaggerated by film critics seeking to afford their medium the same esteem as that of literature. That being said, the director is ultimately responsible for the flow and manipulation of image that makes cinema such a visceral art. He plays a tremendous role in its final product, easily the most important, and those directors who also write their films can truly claim to be their authors.

Do you know what's incredibly reductionist? Thinking that the work of hundreds of people who contribute to a film can be boiled down to one person and their style. Auteur theory is trash and films are pleb garbage. Tarkovsky is shit and I hate all you plebs.

because film was an inchoate discipline which still required a theoretical framework to later tear down for no good reason in typical human fashion

Authors rely on already extant cultural history and languages that millions of other people have provided for them for their work ergo they aren't true artists

That's not auteur theory. Auteur theory argues that the director is simply the primary creative influence on a film, not its only one.

You should read about the ideas you're angrily criticizing before opening your mouth, not after.
