It's hard to say whether someone's a reader by looking at their book case. I read my books, but I buy them all new, and I tend not to crack my spines. On the other hand, you could have someone who never reads but buys all their books used, and it looks like they've read everything they own.

By branch out I mean reading other books by the same author, books that author liked, or mentioned, etc. Eventually you end up with a pretty wide array of authors and books and you end up with a "unique shelf".

That is my method, and it's not really a conscious effort on my part either. So really, it's safe to say that people you see with only the essential meme books are just starting to read and haven't really had time to develop taste and branch out.

That is what got me interested in the more technical parts of science, and gave me a lot of the history not in science textbooks. Also some of Dawkins work (Selfish Gene in particular) is pretty legit science, though most of the rest is pop-sci.

This is the copy of Philosophical Investigations (I put the sleeves of hardcovers in a box because they bother me when reading):

Mostly a mix of the two. The dover books are solid, but extremely technical (except for Pauling's Chem) so they tend to be a last resort for research. I tend to prefer my university's textbooks for practice and understanding of the concepts, and books like Shankar's book on Physics 1.

My interest in philosophy heavily favors analytic philosophy, so I don't think one can truly understand how the universe works without really digging into the meat of empirically derived knowledge (with respect to David Hume's flaw of induction, of course).

Depends what you are trying to accomplish. A lot of continental philosophers (which seems to be favored on /lit/) have a hefty dislike for science and don't trust it. However if you want to have the kind of perspective of how the universe operates that a god might have, one really needs to understand mathematical science.


For reference, I can think of 5 books (one isn't out, but it is a continuation of an amazing book) in technical science which can really help a layperson understand a majority of the undergraduate fundamentals.

1) The Selfish Gene (Dawkins)
2) The Greatest Show on Earth (Dawkins, but basically an updated version of Darwin's OoS)
3) Fundamentals of Physics 1 (R Shankar)
4) Fundamentals of Physics 2 (R Shankar, comes out in June. The first book was spectacular, and they are based on his OYC lectures anyways)
5) General Chemistry (Linus Pauling)

That pretty much covers science, though you will need to have some mathematical knowledge (a lot of which is covered in Shankar's book. Really you just need to understand calculus -preferably multivariable-).

Two other really good choices to add are Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces" and "Six Not So Easy Pieces". Excellent supplements, though a lot of the material is in Shankar's book.

I should add a few things. While those recommendations cover a majority of basic college level chemistry and physics, there is a conspicuous missing chunk in the biology portion which comes from elementary biochemistry and cellular structures. I have no idea if there is a simple cheap intro into those. However the two books by Dawkins give an enormous boost to understanding evolution. Evolution is like mathematics for biologists. If you want to get anywhere in the subject, you must know it.

When it comes to recommending gaining scientific knowledge and understanding, I should add that if you are interested in a general understanding without technical details then you should avoid the books I listed. Pop-sci gets a lot of criticism, especially string theorist who make their subject seem more legitimate by publishing it as pop-sci (even though it is still completely unfounded). Still, if you know what to read in pop-sci, you can really get huge amounts of quality knowledge of the universe and nature. You miss out on the ability to look at nature through the lens of a deity, but you gain general knowledge which can help you make better decisions on scientific topics. Books I recommend in that case are Hawking's Brief History of Time and Carl Sagan's Cosmos. People rip on them a lot, but they are solid introductions. They also give a lot of the history of science, especially its roots in philosophy, which you don't get out of technical books.

Pihlosophy undergrad, actually. My uni has very well known linguistics and philosophy programs (as well as generally great science programs), but no cognitive science department yet. I'm actually doing what they call their "cognitive studies focus" within the philosophy major. I plan on doing cognitive science or linguistics for grad school.

The sad thing is that while typing this, I realized that by average contemporary American standards, an adult that reads teen/young adult genre fiction is probably slightly more well read and/or "intelligent" than average. If you really are looking to try your hand at reading, literally all of those books are shit. Your best bet, especially when starting out is just to stick to classics, particularly modern classics. What that means is basically the great authors of 19th and 20th century, e.g. Charles Dickens, Franz Kafka, Anton Chekov, Johann Goethe, Honore de Balzac, Fyodor Dostoevsky, George Orwell, Lewis Carroll, etc.
