Any good?

Yes. Maupassant is the undisputed French master of the short story.
He covers a wide range of styles, from naturalism (Boule de Suif) to strange horror stories (Le Horla).

Sounds great, is it a good account of France during the 19th century?
>>
>>7896509
yes. very anti-prussian though as is typical, but also about how french people suck.
>>
>>7896509
Yes, as good as Zola or Flaubert.
His characters come from varied social milieus, and there are many references to historical events, like the Franco-Prussian war.

Think i'll buy it then, I'm really interested in France during that time. Does that edition in particular have anything I need to look out for or is it the best one you can buy?

>>7896514
Are the references explained with some notes or will I need some reference texts?
>>
>>7896519
i dont know about this particular edition but i've never felt like maupassant really needed notes. the references are straightforward/self explanatory generally. just know the franco prussian war exists and that's pretty much it.

I read it in French, so I wouldn't know if the English edition has notes, unfortunately.
Maupassant doesn't go into details like Hugo, he mainly uses a historical, social or political framework to tell a good story, not educate the masses, so I guess you'll need reference texts if you want to know more about 19th century French society.

Great, really looking forward to reading this now!

I'll have a look around for some, thanks
