I need help /lit/ , I became obsessed with reading to the point of no return. The only thing I want to do in my life is to shut myself inside my room and read the countless books in my shelf. I don't want to talk to anybody or do anything else. I've got money to survive. Do any of you had a similar phase? Do any of you have the solution to my problem?
>>
>>7893678
That's a great obsession.
Just read.

read this to snap out of it
>>
>>7893678
How do I enter this phase?
>>
>>7893680
Well, you are by no means the vaccine I was expecting. That said, you sound like you have the same obsession as well.

>>7893684
Can it really help me? I am thirsty, aware of my own ignorance, I want to know more. I know that essence is within me and not outside, but I just can't get enough, I need more and more! Even if I know something, I want different points of view on it! I am truly sick.
>>
>>7893684
this was said in jest, btw. The book is pertinent to your situation but don't think there will be a revelation and change of lifestyle when you're finished. Still great book though. Seriously though, i've gone through a situation similar to yours. And i have a feeling it is just a phase that will pass like it was with me. granted, it was a long phase, but i cant really say i regret it in retrospect. Devour the hell out of those books, anon. It can be satisfying. PErhaps try to be more social about it if the loneliness gets to you. Go to a park/coffee shop and read, talk about books online or with others in real life (a hard endeavor to be sure, luckily i had a pretty cool coworker at the time). Are you starting to feel bad about what you're doing, or are you just trying to nip this in the bud before things get worse?

well in that case, faust is the book for you, anon.
>essence is within me
what do you mean by this? are you an existentialist?
>>
>>7893721
>Are you starting to feel bad about what you're doing, or are you just trying to nip this in the bud before things get worse?

Both I think, I don't like the idea of being an hermit, I've been told it is too hard to come back to society after a certain amount of time passes. I mean, how do you reconnect with people after a while?
>>
>>7893733
I'll look into that book, thanks.

>what do you mean by this? are you an existentialist?

What I meant is that I believe that the truly important things in life are within us manifested in actions. What is the point of philosophy If it can't be implemented in your current circumstances? If it can't affect you or the people around you in a significant manner then it's no use to me. What good is a book if I don't have the will to act on it?
I believe in action, here and now. Its simplistic I know.
>>
>>7893736
i see, and totally admit that from my own experience, reconnecting is something that I honestly can't say i've done entirely, and it's now been a couple years. But it was also due to other circumstances forcing me to withdraw from my old group of friends and having subconscious trust issues with making new ones. that is actually a topic talked about at the end of >>7893684
pic related. Huysmans compares to journey back into society as a disbeliever coming back to faith. damn hard thing to do. but not impossible
>>
>>7893759
Seems an interesting book, I will dig in it.
>>
Read and read and read until you start writing yourself. Believe me, it will happen. This is problem only in the head of the philistines around you. Every great writer has a phase like that. It's said that Shelley would read up to sixteen hours a day, and would frequently fall asleep during random parts of the day because he would spent whole nights just reading.

Just don't read crap for God's sake.
>>
>>7893733
seconding faust

>>7893759
The journey back is what I'm afraid of.
>>
>>7893777
How do I manage people though? They think I'm nuts.

Oh, I forgot to say that I'm coming back to the english environment recently and I'm discovering that my grammar needs polishing. Sorry If I look like I'm illiterate.
>>
>>7893792
Why do you care what other people think? You have the financial resources to support yourself, so do whatever gives you happiness.
>>
>>7893777
Not everyone wants to write
>>
>>7893819
You see, there is a little part of me that remains inside reminding me that if I proceed I will be left out. You have to work on relationships or you'll end up losing them. Do I just give it all up in order to pursue my passion?
>>
>>7893835
humans are naturally social creatures. we are literally programmed to interact with others. definitely don't neglect that, or i think all you'll find is despair. I frankly dont believe anyone who says otherwise. im not saying you have to have to be super crazy extrovert guy, but everything in moderation yadda yadda
>>
>>7893835
What about chores like paying bills, cleaning house, etc.? Are you on top of shit like that? Maintaining relationships is just another set of chores to add to the list. Schedule in a few minutes every day for talking to friends and family. Don't overthink it.
>>
>>7893850
The middle path all the way in, I understand now.

>>7893854
>What about chores like paying bills, cleaning house, etc.?

I ditched all my furniture except for my bookshelf, and I only need to pass a rag on the floor to clean it. I pay bills once a month but it takes me like five minutes to do it. Also, I don't cook anymore, I just eat raw vegetables from my garden/market
>>
>>7893835
You're acting like you read sixteen hours a day, which you don't.

Just use well the time you don't use to read. Go outside and meet people at classical music concerts, libraries, and whatnot. Just don't become friends with useless idiots because, believe me, it will turn you into a twat.
>>
>>7893878
>I just eat raw vegetables

This guy is hardcore
>>
>>7893925
kinda jealous, to be honest. i want a garden. would miss meat though. god would i miss meat.
>>
>>7893878
It sounds like you are too far gone to turn back now. Just tell people you have become a monk and have sworn a vow of silence for the next 20 years.
>>
>>7893930
>kinda jealous, to be honest. i want a garden. would miss meat though. god would i miss meat.
Not gonna lie to you, I eat meat ocasionally. I eat like this because I like the freedom of it, I would like everyone to live like this, a fantasy I always had.
>>
>>7893931
Why do you say that? Nobody knows I live like that. I adopt a charismatic personna in public in order to protect myself, If I learned something from life is that the only way to survive is through the art of discretion, by being just one of the bunch.
>>
>>7893955
So what's the problem? Keep doing that.
>>
>>7893955
Why do you give a damn about the 'public'? Jesus, just read and tell everyone else that you have changed your life goals and now you want to become a writer which means you have to read like a mad man, end of story. You're acting like a child in this thread.
>>
>>7893962
If it ain't broke, don't fix it?

>>7893967
>Why do you give a damn about the 'public'?
Because if I "opt out" of social interactions and society's responsibilities in general the system will eat me, I can't really explain it clearly, but my experience has thought me that. Sorry If my arguments sound childish, but I can't deny I am one inside.
>>
>>7893802
>tfw I think I'm reading that book right now

just before (physics) exams as well..
>>
>>7893995
Well, are you going to keep us in suspense? just like your studies? Which book!??'
>>
>>7893678
Part of the pleasure of reading is recognizing the parallels between the author's experiences or beliefs and your own, in essence I think isolating yourself will from the world will diminish your appreciation of the books you're consuming.

If you've got money there's no problem.
>>
>>7894019
Why? is it that important? Or is it about principles?
>>
>>7894006
Hmm. This is a good point. However, I feel that if you have experienced certain things once -- obsession, injustice, bereavement -- you don't need to experience them again to continue to recognise them. Plus, empathy and seeing / feeling through someone else's consciousness is an equally significant draw of reading, which I don't think -- outside of being mogli -- requires social interaction.
>>
>>7894032
if you decided to push on and live like this, what do you think could be the worst that could happen?
>>
>>7894024
You want to sit around and read. You have the money to afford this.

What would be the problem that you need a solution to?
>>
>>7894161
The problem is that I may or may not be leaving my sanity behind.
>>
>>7894174
The trick is to stay socialised and healthy enough. If you eat well and get enough exercise and interact with people a bit when you're running errands and doing grocery shopping it probably won't be that bad.

You may not like these things but they're needed to stay functional in the long run I think. In my experience being too much of a hermit leads to massive social anxiety when you inevitable do have to go out.

You have to keep one foot in the world.
>>
>>7894188
I understand. It's impossible to leave the "conventional human" lifestyle after all. It's not that bad anyways.
>>
>>7894174

This is the price of real knowledge. A lot of everyday people who like to read don't challenge themselves like you do. You're the rare kind that absolutely has to know and can't live any other way. Which honestly isn't that horrible compared to a lot of really mentally deadening shit that the majority of people in society are obsessed with. Try to moderate your habits a little bit as other anon have said, but don't be too frustrated if you can't extricate yourself entirely from this obsession. You sound like the real deal, so you will probably always be like this to some degree.
>>
>>7894174
'Sanity' is dispensable. Most of us have less than 20,000 days left to live, anyway. Spend them how you wish.

You could give little spells of solitude a try and see how you fare though. Some people handle it very well.

I'd like to give it a try at some point to spend a month in completely solitude or something.
>>
>>7894221
You think I should be myself 24/7 without trying to fit in? Seems like a risky move, but I get your point. How else can we reach our peak if we hold back like this?

>>7894223
I will try as well. I'm not a half measure kind of guy, but I'll see what I can do

>>7894208
Your post made me reflect, moderation does not come easily to me though
>>
>>7894265
Caution doesn't imply being half-measured, I think. Think of it as a test drive rather than compromise.
>>
>>7894265
Total isolation is without a doubt a step towards madness, and not in a poetic way. My experience of people who remove themselves from other people because they are too disapointed in the general public is that they are always ecstatic to have someone to talk to. Certainly if you have the money to live a life of leisure it is sensible to, and if you want to spend that leisure almost entirely on reading it is not a bad idea, Wilde said it was one of the most beautiful ideas in life.
As you were saying before 'follow the middle path' (and don't listen to buddhists), remember that you are a human animal, you need the emotional enrichment of others or else you will become ill. Happily talking to other people, even people who might not be as clever, is also an intellectual excercise and will make you better as well as stopping you from getting worse.
>>
>>7894315
Good advice. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to do this out of misanthropy or narcissism, I just don't want to be with people, for a while at least. But you said it, we need to interact or else we'll get sick. I will spend my free time both socializing and investigating in solitude. Also, you seem to know a lot about the subject, where you in a similar situation?
>>
>>7893678
Before I can give you and decent advice:

How old are you?
What is your education or employment history?
How much money do you have and what country you are from?
What are you actually reading?

I haven't spoken to a person irl for 6 years, except a few phone calls to my parents every 2 months or so.
I still feel sane.

But something is missing.
And I feel often lost in thought. Life seems so pointless when your pursuits aren't physical and at the end ineffectual.
