One of my english teachers said that the movie Lolita didn't make sense because they showed her age in the movie. In the book he said there was no indication of her age until Humbert and Haze are at the hotel and one of the hotel customer says something like are you going to fuck her? >>
>>7863483

I can't tell you how to write it, that's kinda up to you, but there are many things that could bring about cosmic dread if you just shine the light upon it. Lovecraft didn't invent nor does he have a copyright on cosmic horror.

Take the Nibiru theory and just run with it. Write a story about a rogue planet or some other large mass that flies by the so close to the earth that the earth is shifted much further out of its orbit or ejected from the solar system completely. the horror of the human race as it comes to terms with it's demise would be fascinating.

Cosmic dread is about tiny humanity coming to understand its true place in the cosmos and the universe's utter disregard of human existence or feeling.

A human is fluid as it pertains to Gender and Sexuality.
But Gender and Sexuality are not fluid, they are constant descriptors.
A man may fluidly change into a woman (arguable, but let's suppose its true for the time being)
And a humans sexuality may be fluid, between straight or gay.
But the classification of Male (as a gender) or Female can never change places, or be fluid.
Same goes for Sexuality, the terms have their implicit meaning, and they do not change.
Only the human is fluid.
So how is it that Gender and Sexuality are fluid?
>>
>>7864421
might we hypothesize that all terms are fluid depending on the conditions of various language games and the subjects conception of the signifiers?

that is if we even accept the metaphysical notion of words denoting objects or ideas
>>
>>7863689
much of what Plato and Aristotle say need context which can be best gotten from understanding the world he was writing in. You should be familiar with he history and mythology of Greece before you begin with the pre socratics.
>>
>>7864458
I suppose you could, but until people can communicate telepathically the idea that all terms are fluid is detrimental to communication.
We use words to communicate so we can share our perspectives and experiences in such a way that is relatable to the listener.
If we were all at once to accept that terms are fluid depending on the condition, it doesn't make a difference to their meaning unless we apply that attribute of fluidity.
Causing complete and utter mayhem and special snowflake catastrophe.
Every word would be misunderstood if we applied them in our own ideas of "fluid"
and from misunderstanding does conflict most arise.
>>
>>7864509
just because it's detrimental to communication doesn't mean it isn't the case

just because we have to pretend it isn't the case for this conversation to happen doesn't mean it isn't the case.
>>
>>7864421
Gender is a shit descriptor anyway, just use sex and a whole lot is cleared up.
>>
>>7864516
I agree with that, but the hypothesizing is really useless unless you apply the theory.
And applying the theory would result in a big ol' fashioned shit show.
Until people can figure out a way to communicate that doesn't rely on preconceptions and universally agreed meanings for our symbols, then we should stick to it.
>>7864550
Agree with this. I was using those terms to be on the same page as the person I was responding to.
I'm not going to put words in his mouth and then argue about them, that would just be silly.
Still, I agree with you that Gender need not be a descriptor at all, and that Sex is the superior

I'm planning on writing my own book
It starts with the MC being in a battle but is somehow taken away, and comes back hours later to find his buddies all dead

What i planned was this
He's thrown off of a cliff and into the ocean, then he's washed up on land and wake up hours later
Is that alright, or does it sound dumb? Would it be probable that a battle was fought on top of a cliff, or that he'd survive the fall, or should i rewrite it?
>>
>>7864896
depends on the story

keep the tone consistent
>>
>>7864908
Well, i want it to be a somewhat serious story

But i mean, would it have been stupid of two forces to meet over a cliff? Wouldn't both forces have avoided the battle taking place there if they could?

BTW: the battle takes place not far from a minor city, if it makes any difference
>>
>>7864954
>But i mean, would it have been stupid of two forces to meet over a cliff? Wouldn't both forces have avoided the battle taking place there if they could?
I don't think so. It would be even more logical if the tone of the battle is epic. When is the battle settled, if it is settled in time?
>>
What is "YA shit"?
>>
>>7865046
You could have just googled that. Young Adult, stuff like John Green, Hunger Games etc.
>>
Should I read Aristotle's Metaphysics before Nicomachean Ethics?
>>
>>7865024
It's supposed to be the start of the story
MC gets thrown away, and when he gets back there, the battle is over, and everyone else is dead, including the ones in the city
So the rest of the battle won't be shown, just the point up until MC is knocked out, and then the aftermath
He then has to find his way back to civilization, but avoid enemy forces
>>
Long shot but here we go:

In Gravity's Rainbow, somewhere midway-ish through the book, Slothrop is in the Zone and having a dream about a chick who fucks animals, kisses the hoof of a horse and like drowns in a river and all sorts of animals come out of her vagina. Or something like that. I liked that bit and would like to reread it but was foolish enough not to mark it and can't find it anymore, even though I think the formatting was different than the normal text. Could anyone point me to the correct page? I have the 902 page Vintage Classics edition (with the colourful rocket silhouettes on the background), but can find it myself if you give me the page in a different edition.
>>
>>7865060
I would try to think up a reason for MC to have left everyone of his own volition, like pursuing an enemy he has a personal grudge against. That way when he comes back you can get stuck into some nice survivor's guilt feels. No one's going to blame themselves for falling off a cliff.
>>
>>7865110
That's a good idea
I can't take it straight like that, though, first off because it doesn't work with the story that MC knows any of the enemies personally, and because i was hoping to make him a commanding officer

But i think i can work it out

Got any more advise?
>>
Who is the Ayn Rand of Communism/Socialism?
>>
>>7865232
Well maybe could stick with the cliff idea but acknowledge the unlikeliness of it in the story. Have MC lament that God or fate or whatever is taunting him by keeping him alive and alone as punishment for failing to protect those in his charge.

>>
>>7865980
I'm not so sure. My peers wouldn't judge me, because dating promiscuous girls is not socially discouraged. Most "alpha" dudes date women who have had sex with lots of people like them before.

It bothers me that I'm not her first, but I don't know why it should. A huge part of it is that I'm a virgin (although I've done everything but), but even if I wasn't, I'd prefer a girl who was fully committed to me. If this person and I get together and then break up, I'll be just another ex. If she was a virgin, I'd be the ex she'd remember for the rest of her life.

Wow great thread.

All right. Here's a question that's probably been asked a million times.

I'm almost finished my first book, which is fucking incredible because I've never finished a book in 10+ years of writing great starts to novels that turn out shit. I'm really proud of this one, and I think it's really important that it get out there.

I've got two problems. One, I'm not sure if I should find an agent or if I should just go Amazon.

Two, if I do go the agent route, I have no idea who would even consider this, because in its essentiality, it is gay sadomasochistic vampire erotica with overtones of extreme pain play and themes of domestic and mental abuse. Kinda started out as a porn and evolved into this really elaborate and deep-thinking story that I now have straight people following on Literotica.

I don't know if an agent would consider this kind of thing. If they would, I'm not even sure where to start looking. I heard that it's best to find an agent who has previously published books that represent your work, so I was trying to find whoever helped out Poppy Z. Brite with her/his works. Can't seem to find them.

... Thoughts, I guess?

I say sometimes the curtains are just blue.

I wrote something where the main character regularly dyes his hair. There was a lot of speculation that this represented some part o himself that blah blah blah he wants to change and blah blah blah. Fact is that's true but it has nothing to do with his hair color. I ended up throwing a discussion in there just to say "Hey, sometimes blue hair is just blue hair."

Tell them to learn what literary analysis is. Sure, the curtains might just be blue, but if the color blue shows up a lot in the story, or if there are other curtains, you could extract meaning from that. Literary analysis is pretty subjective and it's just based off of interesting arguments, so saying "the curtains are just blue lel" is either a display of ignorance, or (rarely) it's the statement that you don't have enough evidence to make a compelling argument about what the blue curtains mean.

When you use the forward-slash (/) symbol in this context:

Cultural Marxism is difficult to disentangle

Yes there were/are radical Jews who consciously want to "erode Western society" (for various reasons)

Yes there probably are major power blocs, with Jews heavily overrepresented, that understand the value of turning populations into ghettoized soups (if you're a Marxist/socialist, immigration is the perfect bourgeois attack against class consciousness; if you're right wing, it's the perfect bourgeois attack of technocracy against healthy cultures)

Yes Kevin McDonald is mostly right

Yes he's also a neo-Nazi (they drove him nuts by shitting on him, but he had leanings to begin with)

Yes the Frankfurt School can be and is often incorporated into types of leftism that privilege extreme relativism and the destruction of Western institutions and "values," and yes the Frankfurt scholars themselves may have had various utopian things that seem dystopian to right wingers or even centrists, but they were fundamentally culture critics and not conspiracy theorists

But yes, they did do conspiratorial things and try to influence mainstream culture and politics as well

Fundamentally, in the few places they really rub up against /pol/'s sensibilities, they are more symptomatic of the "degeneracy," self-loathing, doubt, and ultra-relativism of the 20th century than originally causative of it. Their critiques are actually useful and good too.

Jews are difficult. They are chauvinist fuckers with group solidarity and lots of nepotism, but most of them aren't consciously conspiratorial, even and the ones who are conspiratorial are usually boring about it (just opportunists or Israel hawks, not grand masterminds).
>>
>>7870631
>>7866184
Also yes there was concerted effort to open up immigration laws and get rid of filters, in ways that were detrimental to the host countries. McDonald is right about that. Many Jews used their power and influence to make the US a safe haven for massive amounts of Jew refugees and emigrants, many of them radical.

There are a lot of mutually supporting fibers to it, but in the end, the "Great Jew Conspiracy" is a red herring. Jews are congenitally brilliant and congenitally schizophrenic perpetually survival-mode nepotists without a home. They do some weird stuff sometimes and some of them are involved in conspiratorial shit but they are not the Illuminati.

Perverted linguistics question. I'm searching for the right word.
The allure of a woman is so fascinating. The 'physics' of how the vagina responds to when pressed, prodded, pushed, pulled, squeezed. Replace that word 'physics' with a more appropriate word. I'm referring to the quality of the vagina. You can replace it with any body part for that matter. But what is the best word to use in place of 'physics' that refers to composition and movement, how it moves, etc.

To put it another way. Cow's udders sway when the cow moves. They are spongy in composition. The whole quality of that body part. It's consistency relative to the rest of the body. The shape, texture, composition, feel, etc. What is that. What is the right word that refers to that.

Well I do, but I'm not sure how well it will mesh. I'm trying to find something that's like what I first thought of.

The thing that came to my mind was being a catechumen that is being baptised soon, but that's not really very fitting for your story, since he's emerging from another life and becoming religious, rather than growing up religious and being exposed to a whole new lifestyle. The reason I like this is because it gives the story a sense of urgency, he wants to sort things out before he has to make that commitment I know this because this is exactly what I experienced kek, >tfw you become an atheist again a week before your baptism

However, I'm trying to think of an analogous experience for someone who's more of a cradle Christian.

A concept you could put into the story is that of having his mettle tested before he makes this large commitment. The devil wants him to stray from the path God is leading him to. That's kind of a reccuring thing in the Christian experience, the devil will tempt you the hardest the closer you are to virtue.

But yeah, just throwing that out there. Something along those lines might work, might not.

I get what you're saying. I think the feeling I was going for is more of... discovering a new thing to worship, and not knowing which is more valuable to you, or which is the "right" path.
I even played with the idea of him having a Christian girlfriend and ending up doing this BDSM thing behind her back... with a guy. At some point he'll end up wearing this collar around his neck 24/7, trying to hide it and everything. The only external conflict I could come up with was another Dom fucking with them, but god, that's so cliche and it's been done a hundred times.

I think you're right, though. It should come from his religion. I'm just not sure how.

Try putting duct tape on it for like two weeks straight. If that doesn't work you can buy an at home freezing set thing for pretty cheap. And if that doesn't work just goto a doctor if it's bothering you and they'll actually freeze it off. Doesn't really hurt or anything.
