Most fun you can have with an NYRB book

I started Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian the other day, read about a hundred pages and can't decide if I want to keep going. I really like the relationship forming between Jack and Steven but all the nautical terms are making it difficult for me. Anybody else have opinions on this book/series?
