>>
maybe not but works with a depressing nature certainly are the greatest
>>
the traits that would make you a good author would also help in getting into a depressed state
>>
>>7802558
Stop with this meme. Just because your life is shitty doesn't mean you have talent for writing.

just because you don't like it doesn't mean its a meme

Think yourself of all the great works of literature and then look at how many kind of have a tragic undertone
>>
>>7802569
Thinking depression is the key to be a good writer is a meme.

a meme is an idea. that not necessarily a bad thing, it reflects reality because a lot of writers were depressed. Why do you think writers have a higher suicide rate than average? People like reading about the gloomy parts of life.
>>
>>7802593
Sure, keep telling yourself that.

>Why do you think writers have a higher suicide rate than average?
In my country, cops have a higher suicide rate than anyone else.
>>
>>7802599
ok, I will
>>
My life is shit and i live in constant fear and depression. It's a great consolation for me to think that i'm still young and the feelings i had will eventually shape me into an artist. But the reality is that you need money

>he's not depressed and wants to be a writer, so he makes fun of people who think you have to be depressed to be a writer on 4chan, despite the fact that you basically do have to be depressed to be a writer.
"you don't have to have problems to be a good writer" is something bad writers without problems tell themselves for comfort. but hey, you're a good wroter, right? So maybe with luck you'll join the relatively problem-free ranks of writers like J. k. Rowling... Oops, can't think of any others.

can you name a part of reality that isn't an idea?

JD Salinger, Zadie Smith, Proust, Joyce, Beckett, Nabokov, Tolstoy, Pynchon, Melville, Faulkner

Proving my point.

>>7802607
I don't even write, I'm more of a science guy. All I'm saying is, you guys are cringeworthy.

>hurr durr im so depressed but ill be a good writer hurr cuz all good writers are depressed hurrrrrrr

The autism is strong on this board.

How about...the sun

Ohhhh Shit BTFO!
>>
>>7802621
>Salinger
Famously depressed
>Smith
Bad writer
>Proust
Gay and in bad health
>Joyce
Possibly schizophrenic, definately a rough childhood
>Beckett
Suffered a major mental breakdown
>Nabokov
Fair, but Nabokov was still more of a classical genius than most authors, certainly more than OP will ever be
>Pynchon
neither of us really know much about him, do we?
>Faulkner
Alcoholic & depressed
>Melville
>Tolstoy
Might have had something, I don't know, but who cares? It's not the 19th century any more, we're talking about recdnt authors, necessarily.
>>
>>7802644
Nabokov dad was assassinated and his brother was killed in the holocaust
>>
>>7802623
>I don't even write, I'm more of a science guy
I guess I agree with you but I hate 'science people'.
Therefore, fuck you.
>>
>>7802649
Nice. Thanks
>>
>>7802644
Gay and bad health doesn't mean he was depressed, you wanker.
>>
>>7802657
No, but it means major problems beyond his control.
>>
>>7802650
I just like astrophysics and biology. What's wrong with it?
>>
Depression can't make you passionate enough to write AT ALL.
Writers develop depression afterwards or write under medications or in their periods of non-depression.
>>
>>7802668
You're literally grasping at straws at this point. You should consider suicide.
>>
>>7802675
its like youre checking shitposting boxes

maybe you should mention autism again or post another one of those clever little reaction images

>>
>>7802682
Not at all. Why are you so easy to judge?
>>
>>7802692
Yes, I would if that knowledge was beneficial to myself.

Thanks for proofing my point.
>>
>>7802682
I never even hear people say that

I do hear a SHITLOAD of angry lib arts graduates whining constantly about the STEM boogeyman though

With the level of whining that comes from lib arts people, youd think they were extremely bitter and vitriolic about something
>>
>>7802682
>>7802705
both of you are right and proved each other right
>>
>>7802699
>Why are you so quick to judge?
Because STEMfags keep fucking up discussions on, for example, college courses by shitting on everyone who majored in a non-STEM subject.
This is a common phenomenon on this website.
>>
>>7802706
>ur just as bad as him :^)
>>
>>7802706
Kinda true. Beautiful, isn't it?
>>
>>7802708
I'm not like that. Why are you judging me?
>>
>>7802722
>I'm not like that
Maybe you are, maybe you aren't. I hope that you aren't. Still, it makes sense to assume that the majority of STEM people are like that. Why? Because their shitty behavior can be observed way too often on this website.
>>
>>7802733
And what about your shitty behavior?
>>
>>7802736
My shitty behavior is due to my detestable personality. Got nothing to do with my intrests.
>>
>>7802739
In that way, a "STEMfag" shitty behavior is due to his detestable personnality. Nothing to do with his interests.

I'm asking you again, why are you judging me?
>>
>>7802739
so you are depressed? why don't you just become a writer
>>
>>7802747
>Nothing to do with his interests
Well, but his shitty behavior usually always revolves around his intrests.
>why are you judging me?
Because you identify as a 'science person' ( >>7802623 )
and those usually behave like shit on the internet.
Reread my previous posts.
>>
>>7802749
Because depression (alone) doesn't make a good writer, dumbass.
>>
>>7802762
>Well, but his shitty behavior usually always revolves around his intrests.

I've never met a person like that. Have you?
>>
>>7802776
These people are all over 4chan. Are you new here?

I just wasted 10 minutes reading through this thread.

There are very few constants with good writing. Hard work and introspection two examples, though hard work and study by themselves don't produce a good writer. There also needs to be a motivation or a build up of something to be said and I believe this is where the depression typically comes from. Happiness, though it also produces great work (I think mostly of great romantic poetry here), does not resonate as well as unhappiness. People don't just want to read about/explore the misery of other way, they see more of themselves in it. It becomes more of a parody of the average individual's life. And to create that, you need to know it. I don't think you have to be depressed to be a good writer, but there are fundamental questions that everyone deals with, and that good writing addresses. So it's more like just most people are not that happy. You're simply going to be more likely to find a depressed writer, especially with the amount of introspection required to create something good.
>>
>>7802789
I mean, in real life.
>>
>>7802675
But first he should write a book.
>>
>>7803157
I was talking about 4chan though.
Oh, and I've met people like this, they certainly exist. But they're not as loud and obnoxious IRL
>>
>>7802818
in other words, people who suck at life compensate with literature
>>
>>7802644
Tolstoi might not have been depressed, but he was certainly bitter as fuck.
>>
>he isn't depressed in this day and age
>>
>>7803649
life is shit compared to literature

d̶e̶p̶r̶e̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ - Alcoholic. Alcohol abuse damages the orexin neurotransmission system which plays a key role in the higher level computations involved in sensing when you are awake or dreaming. This results in dysregulation in the amygdala and lateral hypothalamus, leading to derealization/depersonalization without the usual executive function cognitive defects. This is extremely useful in some parts of introspection, resulting in literature.
>>
>>7802621

Why on earth would you pick Salinger/Joyce//Faulkner for non-depressive authors? Is this ironic?
>>
>>7802546
Suffering is the greatest teacher.
>>
>>7802604
>But the reality is that you need money
No you don't.
Well, it depends, but in burgerstan you can just go to libraries, write your books and live like a hobo.
50 years after you're dead you're bound to get some recognition with all the shit a hobo must go through + being totally dedicated to your art.

don't be a pussy anon, live the literary life!
>>
>>7802546
it's not a prerequisite but there is something transformative about personal suffering

>>
>>7808532

>>
>>7809103
Nothing I guess? Not even sure where to begin in terms of undergoing such a task. Plus I'm bound down by my studies.
>>
>>7809114
I was quoting Joyce and posting Hitler paintings.
It wasn't really a thorough plan, just write about your own life
>>
>>7802569
>Think yourself of all the great works of literature and then look at how many kind of have a tragic undertone

Tragedy is the most positive and empowering kind of art possible though. You'd have to be a pleb to not see how this counters what you are trying to claim.
>>
>>7809134
I dunno, comedy is pretty strong man. Lysistrata is pretty funny.
>>
>>7809134
>>7810312

The two are not mutually exclusive and the best art is able to contain and convey both.
>>
>>7802621
Nabokov was complicated. He was angry and wrote in a (cleverly) emotional way about problems, which in itself is a pretty depressing way of dealing with problems.

“A book is a suicide postponed.”
― Emil Cioran
>>
>>7802674
Theres an assertion that depression can be a more realist perspective on life while the happy are truly just inebriated

http://www.completecounselingsolutions.com/articles/13/Mildly-depressed-people-more-perceptive-than-others

That's just what a cursory Google search yielded.

It says mild depression but who knows?
>>
>>7802621
Half of those were depressed or wrote about melancholy and sadness like Joyce and Proust, which I'm sure the writers deeply felt but did not feel the need to say it out loud.
>>
>>7802558
t. someone who isn't actually/has never really been depressed
>>
>>7802607
Not sure if you were being sincere here, but JK has spoken publically about her problems with depression, and some of the themes in the series are meant to represent aspects of depression (e.g. Dementor's kiss leads to a state of catatonic anhedonia).
