Bookshop thread?
Pic is inside my favourite one, Voltaire and Rousseau in Glasgow. Christ, I could walk in to that place and spend all my money.
Mine was deastore.com, closed down two years ago. Free int. Shipping and books in german/italian/english and spanish. Catalogue was insanely big.
>>7792799
Looks terrible. How are you supposed to get to the shelves if all those stacks are in the way? Also looks like a fire hazard.
>>7792799
Came in to post the same one, good taste anon
>>7792814
Found any replacement? Free shipping and so on.
>>7792820
Who gives a shit about the shelves when they are stacked up in front of you? Also, to be fair that's it looking pretty tidy, I've never seen it looking that tidy when I've been there.
>>7792829
Nope. I reckon it didnt make sense financially. I once order a 2 euro book to peru with free shipping.
>>7792799
Does the owner look like this?
>>7792842
I Wish, I'd go there even more if that were the case.
>>7792826
Glasgow friend?
This is really the only on I know here in Brisbane
>>7792858
oops
>>7792799
It's really not that great, you only find the odd gem, but in the cultural wasteland of Glasgow its nice to pop in occasionally and pretend one is in a real city. Good cat too.
>>7792865
>Cultural wasteland
I'm sorry, have you been to Dundee?
>>7792799
b-but what if you want a book from the bottom of a pile?
>>7792891
Avalanches are a regular occurence
I can't even quantify the number of hours lost and dollars spent in Logos the two years I was in Santa Cruz. It was a pretty outstanding bookstore.
>>7792799
*nihilistic grin* imagine chucking a match or two into those stacks and then running. the bookheads would be FURIOUS, lol
there is a secondhand bookshop in Melbourne that has cats living in it
>>7793795

>>7792799
Myopic books, Chicago. Not pictured: basement, second floor. Love this place.
>>7793795
Cats and dogs always lighten up used bookstores. Makes it feel like grandma's house.
Just moved to eureka a few months back and this bookstore is my go to. Got cheap stuff and stocks some more obscure shit too. Also the employees don't hover around you so 10/10.
>>7793817
>tfw I used to have sex with a teenager who lived 5 minutes away from there
I remember when the owner used to park his car inside.
The absolute madman.
Backstreet Books in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Had complete Bolaño, Faulkner, tons of other stuff. Even had Gass and Gaddis.
>>7793820
The most pretentious employees in the world. I actually bought two books from there while I was in Chicago.
>>7792799
Classic Books on Woodward near Detroit. Small as hell but the selection is disgustingly amazing.
>>7793795
What's it called? Whereabouts in Melbourne?
>>7793944
>West end
>hipster
I never would have guessed
>>7793994
bro ive never heard about this and im from the area
Absolutely no bookstores near me except barnes and noble. Closest would be NYC I guess and I can never justify the $60 round trip train price.
>>7794021
yeah exactly
check it out
>>7794127
I plan on it thanks for the tip
Longfellows in Portland. Real good shit.
>>7794130

>>7793817
Damn the BMV was always the highlight of my week, go there and spend hours inside, then afterwards go to popeyes.
>>7792829
You may well already know about BookDepository, but just in case, here's me telling you about it. Free international shipping (not to every country, but to a good few); decent catalog; prices are usually pretty good.
>live in foreign country
>uneducated pleb not fluent in the native language
>only option is the 1 english bookstore 30 minutes from me
>pay insanely high mark up because the books are imported
>>7794260

>Glasgow.
Holy shit, I live in Johnstone, where is this place?
>>7794908
Why would you unironically choose to live somewhere like that?
This place would be nicer if it wasn't filled with colleges aged hipsters.
It's called Recycled books records and CDs, in Denton Texas
I found this on 4Chan but it was taken at the same place.

Anyone know of any good bookshops in Perth?
>>7795105
Perth Australia or Perth Scotland?
If Aussie I work at Spudshed in Wangara. Currently dating a qt Russian migrant studying at UWA.
>>7795118
Perth Australia. UWA any good?
>>7795105
Elizabeth's is alright, the UWA bookfest is nice when it's on, and you just missed the writer's fest at UWA, they even had some semi-famous people like Bacigalupi, and Dawkins was scheduled too
>>7795128
No idea don't go there myself bud. What do you do?
>>7795079
They only have the worst puzo's
>>7793817
bmv is great.
There's one on yonge close to bloor that's also great.
>>7794894
betterworldbooks in abebooks is great. Really good deals
>no Britfags have posted Hay-on-Wye
Plebs. Does a town of books not appeal to you?
>>7795396
It's a shitty place. I visited last year outside of festival time and it was just your average rural British town. Britain is depressing and nothing about it compensates for the burden of having to live here. Life itself as an extension is a miserable affair, plagued by frustration and humiliation and marked by a slow decline. If you find any redeeming value in your existence you are literally stupid.
>>7795406
Lol wut
The Globe, in Prague. I just looked at the website and it's a lot different than when I was there in 95. But I remember enjoying a lot of time there.
>>7795568
>t's a lot different than when I was there in 95
*tips fedora*
Any Boston bros know any bookstores other than Brattle?
Any Germanbros know where to get cheap used books?
pretty comfy, great selection (Poland)
Anyone know any good used bookstores in the Ft. Lauderdale - Miami area? I just moved here and am running low on books.
The Word in Montreal is the one I go to the most these days.
>>7794274

More bookshop porn.
The smell is incredible.
>>7794907

The Book Loft in Columbus is the coolest bookstore I've been to. Can't wait to move back there.
>>7795072
Hm, do they sell the best ever death metal band out of Denton?
>>7794258
I find once you add shipping to an amazon book it comes out to the same price. So while TBD's shipping is free, their listed price is a lot more.
Abraxas Books in Daytona Beach is probably the best near me.
The Word in Montreal. The selection is just amazing.
>>7797543
>enlglish
>>7792829
Thriftbooks has free shipping on $10+ orders in the US, a pretty solid catalog, and they're cheap as fuck.
I hate to sound like a shill, but it's pretty good if you're American.
>>7795568
It's full of hipsters. Used to live in Prague, remembering going there with my ex for lunch once and there was a guy with a Bukowski sticker on his Macbook.
The selection of books is good relative to the size of the shop but it's expensive.
>>7797746
I used to live right down the street from it.
Macleod's in Vancouver.
>>7797668
I'm sure there's a mountain goats CD in their somewhere.
>>7797866
Fuck, I meant there, I swear.

Why is vancouver's downtown so full of degenerates though?
>>7794087
Same anon. Are you in NJ?
Feels so weird seeing Voltaire Rousseau on /lit/, I go Glasgow uni and go there all the time. It's so close! And also near to my other addiction, shitty Asian chicken houses.
>>7792894
Am fae Govan an I'll pan yer nut in.
Anyone here been to Rare and Racy in Sheffield?
My local bookshop - being bulldozed soon to make a Tesco and a Starbucks, what the fuck.
>>7792799
Was in there yesterday OP, love it.
Great shop if you're not purely interested in classic literature/philosophy. Can find wonderful old books on anything to pique the curiosity
>>7792799
Favourite in Copenhagen where I live is Booktrader.
A labyrinth of books of all sort. Prices are not the cheapest but you can be lucky.
I also really like Massolit Books & Cafe in Krakow and Leakey's Second Hand Bookstore in Inverness.
Anyone visiting either city should check them out.
>>7798738
Picture from Leakey's.
Bought an Ulysses Folio here.
>>7798738
Massolit.
Bought about fifteen books here. Incredible selection and very cheap prices.
>>7798741
Log burner right in the middle of a densely packed bookshop
Black Squirrel Books in Ottawa is pretty cool, they have concerts in there sometimes too, I hear they're trying to open a bar downstairs or something
Holtzer Books in Jerusalem
>>7800745
Its pretty nice shop, small collection but fair prices, some nice community around with open discussion every night and the owner quite knowledgeable.
How do you know so many bookshops?
>My favorite bookshop is this:
>Post picture of some bookshop in Laos
>"Ah yes I remember that one, the owner is quite nice, his mother in law cooks a great chilli but his book collection misses some major titles of the biedermeier period."
Russel Books in Victoria, BC desu lads. Nice selection in a densely packed store.
>>7800808
>Laos
Everyone knows the best bookstore in South East Asia is Fahasa Books in Ho Chi Minh City. His collection of Chinese-language Joyce translations is unrivaled in all the world. And don't even get me started on his collection of hard-cover Wonder Woman comics
>>7800837
/lit/'s pretty decent today. I laughed for the third time.
>>7793820
philosophy section there is fucking trash
You have to travel to the very edge of the Greater Vancouver area but The Book Man in Chilliwack, BC is hands down the coolest bookstore I can think of. Apparently it's the second-largest used bookstore in the province. They even have a "Cool, Rare & the Beats" section which I always thoroughly peruse every time I go there. They have a cat named Nietzche and a cat named Gatsby at their smaller Abbotsford location.
Pic related, it's the eponymous Book Man.
>>7794005
Not OP but I think it's Syber's books on Chapel St
Is this where we go when we die?

Is Book Beat still up there between 10 and 11 on Greenfield (Berkley/Southfield)?
its a narrow front on a beat up strip mall but it goes really far back. one of the best shops I've been to.
OK, my search says it's still there, it's technically Oak Park. pic related.
Never heard of Classic but I haven't been up there in almost a decade.
>>7798210
not from there, but it was my understanding that the heroin scene there permeates the entire culture.
>>7799013
the temptation to burn an armload of cheap, used supermarket genre paperbacks just so I could trigger the fuck out of all the customers would be overpowering.
In London my main ones are Foyles and the Gower street Waterstones (which has 2nd hand books)
I dont know any other ones that seem good, the other used book stores generally have walls of enid blyton and philip k dick etc
>>7793954
Nah m8, I'm a filthy sassanach. Caledonia books is good if you've got mad dolla dolla (read: over £3), though it's a bit less fun than V&R the owners are more knowledgable, and since the shelves have a semblance of order it's possible to find specific books, whilst still being eclectic enough to see babylonian hymns and insane pulp scifi next to each other. If I go to one I tend to go to the other. Are there any good bookshops (or antique places, excluding the barras market) outside the west end? I always feel like I neglect the city.
>>7795406
You can get quite cheap venison in East Anglia, there's that.
Good pargetting too.
>>7793911
Is that the one near Miguel Ángel de Quevedo?
It's a nice place.
>>7804942
I'm from Edinburgh so I don't know Glasgow too well but I doubt it. The West End seems to be the only endearing part of Glasgow.
In Edinburgh we don't have anything as cheap as V&R but we have lots of great book shops. Most of them are small though and you have to walk between them, which isn't a bad thing if the weather isn't bad.
Word Power Books is a great leftist bookshop, some good s/h places on South Clerk Street and on the Grassmarket as well. Also worth a mention but a bit further out is the Oxfam Bookshop in Morningside which has an incredible selection for a charity shop. Probably because most of the University Lecturers live in the area.
Unfortunately I have to leave my beloved Edinburgh in a few months and move down to Newcastle, which seems like a bit of a cultural cesspit. Anyone know any good s/h bookshops there besides the one ran by Amnesty International?
