I vissa enskilda fall har betydelsen av ett efterled inte heller kunnat fastställas eller endast kunnat begripas med vissa tveksamheter på grund av att jämförelse endast förelegat med ett ord på fornengelska etc. Det gäller till exempel efterledet -ust i ortnamnet Orust och förledet Vad i ortnamnet Vadstena, vilka antas syfta på ett fornsvenskt och fornnorskt idag försvunnet vazt/vozt, med motsvarighet i fornengelskan med betydelsen fiskeplats. Samma betydelse föreligger också sannolikt hos efterledet i ortnamnet Alvastra, som då betyder "ål-fiskeplats". Efterledet utgörs då av varianten -vazter (synonym till vazt på samma sätt som holm/holme förhåller sig till varandra) i den plurala formen -vaztra (pluralis genitiv). Pluralformen är vanlig hos ortnamn.[3]
