Untranslated japanese literature

Why would anyone be itching about books that haven't been translated / they know nothing about? If it's a good book it's already translated.

Anyways, just go read some Soseki, Kawabata etc. in Japanese and if you have trouble you can doublecheck with the English versions.

Popular does not equal good, and I'm afraid you're mistaken if you think so. Before Soseki was translated in english, do you suppose he just wasn't good? Do you suppose he "became" good the second he was translated? It's a pointless argument, really.
There are a ton of untranslated gems and I thought /lit/ might know of some. I suppose I was wrong to come here.

Books don't magically become good once they are translated. Every book that's translated now once wasn't and sometimes they haven't been for a damn long time. I know this is obvious, but think a little about it. Whether a book gets translated or not is a matter of demand and foreign exposure and "a good book" doesn't automatically create demand and exposure. Take OP for example. That's been translated to French. I don't know about this book in particular, but many great Horror and Ero Guro manga have been translated into French long before they caught on in the English speaking world, some have still not been released in English. There's just a bigger cultural appreciation of the Japanese brand of the surreal and horrific in France (plus franco belgian comics are highly influenced by manga). It doesn't mean the books aren't "good enough" to be translated to English, it just means English speakers like these themes less or no publisher is yet aware of this untapped demand.

There's no good untranslated Jap lit. Soseki was translated over 20 years ago. Russian lit has much better authors and even they're p much all translated.

So is there no objective worth to a book? Can't you say a book is good in its own merits without questioning a hypotetical target? I'm interested in books that might be not as known abroad but still good and enjoyable in their own ways.

Already translated authors like Akutagawa still have loads of shit untranslated. But really, if you're aiming to learn stuff you should translate an already translated book and then double check the translation.
