I sit here and I wonder if the decadence of such a society is truly worth the risk of enlightenment; the more I open my eyes the more I am greeted by the impotent masses quivering and wavering in the distant sky, almost as if begging to return to earth; but when they are allowed to reverse what problem they have, instead of helping others they in-turn repeat mistakes and on even greater scales; these people don't deserve peace, they don't deserve anything.

as far as Dylan vs Young go, lyrically, Young's stuff feels more intimate and ''specific'' to me if that makes sense. I'm not knocking Dylan by the way, it's just I find Young's lyrics more interesting to me personally.

but hey, at least we can all agree they're both amazing and are still making uncompromising music.

/lit/ related: is Young's autobiography worth reading? I read Dylan's Chronicles recently and immensely enjoyed it, but I've heard some bad things about Young's book.

Three nights before I arrived, I had a dream about Chip Kelly’s nonexistent daughter; she had no name, but she was giving me a handjob under the dinner table (over the pants at first, then she found her way under), and Chip was giving me the ‘she’s touching your wiener, isn’t she?’ look, so I told her to stop, but she wouldn’t; dream things happened, and suddenly she’s on top of me, and I’m on my back, and she’s grinding on me, and I see Chip Kelly over her shoulder at the end of a dimly-lit hallway, “stop.”

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a "best sentence ever written" when you want brevity, at least in my opinion. When I think of "best" I think of great/beautiful prose, which tends to mean more lengthy and poetic sentences than something short and to the point.
Unless you mean content, then that is a whole other can of worms.

>>7754863
Best sentence is probably impossible. Maybe one could pin down the best paragraphs, but the absolute best one would demand the company of the chapter it's found in. One could certainly locate the best chapter; of this I have no doubt; but that would only be doable once the best book has been selected, and at that point we've entered a field too macroscopic to be anything but a matter of taste.

So, no.
>>
>>7754947

Who has never killed an hour? Not casually or without thought, but carefully: a premeditated murder of minutes. The violence comes from a combination of giving up, not caring, and a resignation that getting past it is all you can hope to accomplish. So you kill the hour. You do not work, you do not read, you do not daydream. If you sleep it is not because you need to sleep. And when at last it is over, there is no evidence: no weapon, no blood, and no body. The only clue might be the shadows beneath your eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of your mouth indicating something has been suffered, that in the privacy of your life you have lost something and the loss is too empty to share.

"Not to be born is best
when all is reckoned in, but once a man has seen the light
the next best thing, by far, is to go back
back where he came from, quickly as he can."

"My immortality is necessary if only because God will not be guilty of injustice and extinguish altogether the flame of love for Him once kindled in my heart."

"They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more."

"And it will be easier, remember, to bend thy will to love one who adores thee, than to lead one to love thee who abhors thee now."

"For the long, looming days lay up a thousand things
closer to pain than pleasure, and the pleasures disappear,
you look and know not where
when a man's outlived his limit, plunged in age
and the good comrade comes who comes at last to all,
not with a wedding-song, no lyre, no singers dancing—
the doom of the Deathgod comes like lightning
always death at the last."

"It was to be expected that this book would change, and to the extent that it questioned our terrestrial existence by charging it nonetheless with everything that it comprises on this or that side of the limits we are in the habit of assigning to it, that its fate would closely bound up with my own, which is, for example, to have written and not to have written books"

"Never, never, never, never, never!" - King Lear

I love the last five words of sonnet 23 by John Milton, especially in context:

Methought I saw my late espoused saint
Brought to me, like Alcestis, from the grave,
Whom Jove's great son to her glad husband gave,
Rescu'd from death by force, though pale and faint.
Mine, as whom wash'd from spot of child-bed taint
Purification in the old Law did save,
And such as yet once more I trust to have
Full sight of her in Heaven without restraint,
Came vested all in white, pure as her mind;
Her face was veil'd, yet to my fancied sight
Love, sweetness, goodness, in her person shin'd
So clear as in no face with more delight.
But Oh! as to embrace me she inclin'd,
I wak'd, she fled, and day brought back my night.

The Great Gatsby. Full paragraph:

>I began to like New York, the racy, adventurous feel of it at night, and the satisfaction that the constant flicker of men and women and machines gives to the restless eye. I liked to walk up Fifth Avenue and pick out romantic women from the crowd and imagine that in a few minutes I was going to enter into their lives, and no one would ever know or disapprove. Sometimes, in my mind, I followed them to their apartments on the corners of hidden streets, and they turned and smiled back at me before they faded through a door into warm darkness. At the enchanted metropolitan twilight I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others — poor young clerks who loitered in front of windows waiting until it was time for a solitary restaurant dinner — young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.

I definitely agree. Stuff like Ohio, Southern Man or Cortez the Killer seem to be very blunt but in a way that is different from them being shallow.
It is like is guitar playing. It doesn't matter if they aren't super poetic or whatever because his passion and emotion carries through.
I feel like it kind of reached a point beyond being artistic and just trying to get your message out there. Like it is too important to try and spend time drowning it in metaphors and too important to risk the listener misinterpret it.

When other musicians try to do stuff like that it seems to end up sounding shallow and stupid, but Neil Young can pull it off, which is part of his genius.

Let L denote the language {∀} u {x} u {=} u {(, )}, and let (i)-(iv) clauses define L's grammar as follows:

(i) if ° is a variable, then ° is a term
(ii) if ° and ^ are variables, and * a binary relational symbol, then ° * ^ is a formula of L
(iii) if ° is a variable, and @ a formula, then ∀°(@) is a formula
(iv) nothing else is a term or a formula unless it follows from clauses (i)-(iii)

Put forth the best sentence ever written: ∀x(x=x)

Fix a model <D, S, I> where D is a non-empty set denoting everything in existence, S, the signature of our language L, and an interpretation function I, that we now use to interpret the only binary relational symbol in our language: '='. I(=) = {<x,y> ∈ D x D : x = y} and we're done. Thus, we may now interpret our best sentence ever written as saying: Everything is identical to itself.
