You cant go wrong with Scrivener. There are similar programs but none I can immediately recall.

yWriter is the free version of Scrivener and it's just as good. At least for me.

Q10 for extreme minimalism no distractions

Scrivener for organising finalising etc

Paper and pencil for classic just as good if not better in terms of thought processes

authorea.com. it's originally for academic writing so citing is god-like

sadly, only one private document is free

but latex/word support, never lose your documents, version control, and an "empty" interface like I prefer it

I use Sublime Text.

Just use Vim.
