There is some YA novels that deal with mental illness. I can't think of any specific ones off the top of my head.
short story Eli, the Fanatic by Philip Roth. Actually, all of Roth's books that I've read really gracefully portray the terrors of mental illness. The Plot Against America is good and so is American Pastoral, and both are not centered around mental illness (Eli, the Fanatic is though) but it is a prevalent theme throughout the novels.
