What is the best Shakespeare?
If you post anything other than this you are wrong
>>

I really liked it when I read it but I had no idea what Caesar was trying to say before they killed him.
>>
Sorry, Richard II is probably the best. Richard's speech in the jailcell is brilliant and almost perfectly describes the relationship people have between the world and themselves. But JC is great in its own right, I suppose it is largely a matter of taste at this point.
>>
Still have never read any of his histories.
>>
King Lear.
>>
Titus Andronicus
>>
>>7673874

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.

Still gives me the chills.
>>
It's always so obvious how most posters haven't even read more than 5-10 plays from these threads.

Lit never fails to disappoint.

Easy there, boys! We got us a scholar here.
>>

Dude, spoilers
>>
>>7675276
5-10 plays is still way more Shakespeare than the average person has read or ever plans on reading though.
>>
it was a family activity. especially leading upto the the Oregon shagspeare fest
>>
>>7675276
I seriously doubt there are more than 10 plays of his worth reading.
>>
>>7675443
modern /lit/ everyone
>>
does one need any previous reading before reading his work?

also how to understand it?
>>
>>7675443
After you read about three of one genre in a row you notice a lot of recurring patterns. He was a lot less creative than people think he was.
>>
>>7675443
On this note:

I've stopped reading Shakespeare for a little bit, because I didn't particularly enjoy The Tempest or Midsummer's Night Dream. Does that make me a pleb? O enjoyed Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet
>>
>>7675463
Maybe you just don't like his comedies?
>>
>>7673874
Antony and Cleopatra is best place.
Sonnet 19 is best sonnet.
>>
>>7675562
*play

>>7675451
kys

>>7675463
yes. the tempest is masterful., as is twelfth night. midsummer night's dream was immensely creative but was a bit rough around the edges.
>>
>>7675562
all the time sonnets are good desu

30, 55, 60, 73, 107 all top notch
>>
>>7675274
hey man don't let his hitlerian rhetoric get to you. enjoy it but take it for what it is, remember the most important line from that scene:

>Now let it work. Mischief, thou art afoot,
>Take thou what course thou wilt!
>>
>>7675646
I know, I enjoy it for it's poetic power, not for it's rhetorical one.
>>
>>7675774

Reread The Tempest until you love it. Reread it until it takes over your life.
>>
>>7673874
I like Othello. Iago is the best character.
>>
>>7676938
ditto, read 3/4 of Shakespeare and Tempest is still the best shizz in the game
>>
Obviously Henry IV
