The best available translation is by David Magarshack >>7623347 and is titled The Devils. (Maybe this is who >>7623345 meant to say, given the title, but the Maudes translated Tolstoy.)

Garnett's translation isn't quite adequate. Believe or not, it's reflected in the title even: She titled the book The Possessed, which puts a more passive spin on what the people in question do. (She's also responsible for messing up the title The Brothers Karamazov.)

I'm half through it and it is an infinte jest so far. But i still wonder about why the editors gave this work a new, maybe more contemporary title.

What an interesting translation choice for the title. It makes me wonder whether the translation as a whole is fairly loose; I suspect that it would be. One thing, for what a departure that is from Die Dämonen, is that for its looseness Böse echoes the original Russian title Бecы (Besy), at least phonetically.

This is an interesting point, which never occured to me. I think it is also due to the fact that "Dämonen" is to archaic for a new reception of Dostojewski in our time. According to that the new translation is actually more loose as you suggested, more fluent than of Herman Röhl.

It is funny how the english translation still insists on "Demons" while "Crime and Punishment" is what "Schuld und Sühne" (Guilt and Atonement" is now ("Verbrechen und Strafe").

Hm, I think anyone who speaks more than one language could argue for or against this. Obviously bad translation can occur, or rather, inaccurate translation.

Bjesovi are actually small devil creatures in Slavic mythology which you can find in rare spots since not much survived. Recommending Croatian Tales from Long Ago, pdf illustrated from 1920 can be found online.
