What is the point of putting a paper cover over the hard cover?

What do you guys do with your dust jackets once you remove them? Throw them out? Store them? Are books without their dust jackets diminished in value if you, say, try to sell at a used bookstore?

its a dust jacket. They get annoying when you read but I like them tbqh. I take them out to read and put them back on when I finish the book.
Also ragged dust jackets look cool on old books
