Dear /lit/erally faggots, My mom 61. She's university-educated,

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Dear /lit/erally faggots,

My mom 61. She's university-educated, works, has four kids (lawyer, nurse, musician, and me who is a total fuck-up). She came to me today and told me her new project is to "get smart." She wants to do this by reading all the books she missed by getting her accounting degree in the '70s, raising kids, going back to work, etc etc. She wants one of those "Top 100" or "books to read before you die," or "best books of all time," or what the fuck ever lists to work from. Something that has a mix of classics like Plato with newer stuff like Anna Karenina. I would also appreciate a list with even newer items that have been published within the last 20-30 years if possible.

Problem is, there are approximately 943207 lists and I don't know which is "the best." They vary so wildly; for instance, a book that is #1 on one list won't even be featured on another list at all. So, which list should I send her to work from? Any help is much appreciated!

PS. Any list featuring Ulysses in the top 10 is discounted. I read her an excerpt from that tonight and she couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous it was. So no, none of that tripe.

Those books are in those lists because of good reasons, they might have been endlessly reposted and most of them are considered memes but generally they are very good books and tend to give you a nice overview of literature.

As long as you stay away from lit philosophy meme books you should be fine.
>>
>>7601207
they arent memes because they're bad
its not like we're recommending you buy her a copy of the 10 elemental masters

I like Angela's Ashes but most of this stuff is shit. Bookclub-core

If your mom is hardcore, she'll just read Bloom's Western Canon. Even though its a meme, there's tons of fantastic stuff on there.
Just do it.

I know, I can just guarantee she's not going to be into Lolita or anything by Pynchon. If I give her Lolita to start out with, she's going to call me a faggot and never listen to anything I have to say regarding books ever again.

>>7601257
Novellas are a great idea actually. Anything more "old" in terms of novellas? Like...BC-through the 19th century? She has limited time to read and giving her 1000-page tomes isn't a good start either.

That's why I wrote what I wrote in the OP. Clearly you didn't read it. The point is, she wants to expand her horizons and learn, and I want to ease her into it. Lolita, Pynchon, and Dick Fuck Wallace aren't the ways to go imo. The novellas idea was a great suggestion tho.
>>
>>7601576
Look at the TIME Top 100 Novels, there are some good picks there that aren't too stylistically challenging/complex.

Some other random recs:
Picture of Dorian Gray
Frankenstein
The Alchemist
Vonnegut is a good entry-level author. Also, all the high school writers (Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Golding, Orwell, Arthur Miller, Harper Lee) are a good place to start.
>>
>>7601653
Others that come to mind are Steinbeck, the book Siddhartha. Damn, I'm reliving high school

So basically you want some books good enough for her to be like "whoa, I'm reading some good books!" but not so good that she can't understand them. Makes sense. You can't start with Ulysses after all. Here are my recommendations:

Family Happiness by Tolstoy
Catch-22
Slaughterhouse-Five and The Sirens of Titan
100 Years of Solitude
The Story of Philosophy by Durant

At this point she could probably advance to the next level stuff like Nabakov, Borges, and after them Faulkner.

You're thinking of Finnegan's Wake. Ulysses is fine.
>>
>PS. Any list featuring Ulysses in the top 10 is discounted
Thread hidden
>>
>>7602370

Calling it "not hard" is a bit disingenuous. It IS difficult, but maybe not for the reasons most people say it is. I didn't understand a lot of the slang or references to Irish history/lore/whatever, and some chapters I almost completely didn't understand because of the subject matter and the style in which it was written. But you can really make it through and understand 70-80% of the book, desu
>>
>>7601390
You're not going to find any top 100 lists without Lolita or Ulysses. They're universally appreciated as two of the greatest novels ever written in English.
>>

I thought the point of feminism was to allow women to be educated enough to have the opportunity to write, not to retroactively decide that the few books written by them in the past should be declared better than anyone else's for the simple fact that they're women?
>>
>>7601073
Bet she's got a nice pair of tits, eh OP?

Not sure why you're bringing up feminism. Honestly, my point was that a list of 100 books that's 98% written from the perspective of men is a narrow, boring list, especially if it's to be recommended to a woman.
