Not OP, but he's clearly talking about the edition, man...For example, there are annotated versions of different books and some with forwards by other authors (like OP mentioned) and then there are "scholarly" or "critical" editions. I know for a /lit/ class last semester I had to have the "Norton Anthology critical edition" of Things Fall Apart as opposed to the one with just the text.
