>The word "corn" outside North America, Australia, and New Zealand refers to any cereal crop, its meaning understood to vary geographically to refer to the local ...in British English, "corn" can mean any cereal.
For the reference of any ignorant septics currently browsing: this is a field of corn.

Hard to tell if you don't know about Burroughs already. It's more colourful than Naked Lunch. Contains much anal sex for no particular reason, as well as systematic descriptions of penises and their hues. It's very gay, is what I'm trying to say. Blends genres otherwise, with the occasional bit of (accidentally?) great prose amidst the confusion.

Basically, the picture depicts a really shitty poor christmas. The kids got the most basic presents (notebooks and such), the tree looks awful and the whole picture was taken in a hospital, meaning some loved relative of them was probably dying at that moment. Still, they try and force out a smile.
Crime and punishment actually elaborated a lot on the themes of poverty, illness and the desperate attempt to make the best out of it. There is a subplot in there about a drunkard's family, which Dostoyevski intended as a separate book at some point in time, before it got incorporated into C&P. That part really stuck with me, because I did not expect it, while the Raskolnikov part I was already somewhat familiar with from all the reviews and whatnot.
