I flicked through this book out of curiosity at my local supermarket and I didn't smirk once. I mean, I didn't expect to as I'm not a fan of Pewdiepie and I'm clearly not part of his target audience, but still: for the price they're asking for the book, you'd hope there'd be some ghost-written gags or something that could muster a smirk.

This year seems to be the year of Youtuber's book deals though: KSI has one, Felicia Day, Dan & Phil, Ashens (probably the only one I'd consider since it's about kitsch, rubbish video games rather than himself, and it seems pretty well put together too), Zoella, etc.

I guess fair enough to them if they can make some extra cash on the side by releasing a book - there's definitely a large enough audience for these you tubers with 1 million + subscribers, but a lot of them are coffee table books for young teens.

I read Submission last weekend. It really underwhelmed me, especially compared to his other books. It reads more like that book Eurabia or some other political guesswork than a proper work of fiction. The narrator moves around from place to place, meeting the ideal person in each situation who goes on to talk for three pages to explain some aspect of political change, all this held together with Houellebecq's (rather cliched, on this occasion it seemed) casual negative observations of contemporary Western culture (women dressing up for work but being lazy at home with their partners etc). Why am I even writing this it's such a waste of time to invest in the illusion that posting on 4chan is the same as having a conversation or actually doing anything more than just wasting my time.
