I've looked at the wiki. Can't find what I'm looking for. What are the essentials for someone who wants to start on Greek mythology?

What, to read? Bullfinch or Hamilton. The stories were all oral tradition forever then they were collected. Ovid's Metamorphoses if you want an earlier lyrical version of the myths.

Yeah, to read. I know the stories and the characters (Medusa, the Minotaur, Achilles, etc) but I don't know why I know them. So I want to read the source. Thank you for the info and suggestions.

Just checked them both out. Exactly what I'm after. Thanks pal. Much appreciated. /thread

That stuffs as much of a "source" as you'll get since each city-state had different versions of the stories. There's this amazing animated book that covered a pile of the stories. I know Barnes and Nobles covers it. I read it like an addict in junior high. It's aimed at children but it's great and not Disney-fied if you can get past it being illustrated.
