It's about a misanthropic anti-socialite. He understands society from an "outsider in the bushes" kind of angle, but is both so beyond or below them that he can't adjust to it and abandons it. But sometimes he's reluctant to admit things or changes his opinions over the course of the writing, like a live experiment. It doesn't really lead to anything besides reflections such as this is the modern hero, or rather anti-hero, fit for our modern lives.
