The term esoteric first appeared in English in the 1660 History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, in his description of the mystery-school of Pythagoras. The Pythagoreans were divided into "exoteric" and "esoteric"
The concept of Western esotericism is a modern scholarly construct
Scholars established this category in the late 18th century after identifying "structural similarities" between "the ideas and world-views of a wide variety of thinkers and movements"
Western esotericism consists of "a vast spectrum of authors, trends, works of philosophy, religion, art, literature, and music"
A seventh definition used in scholarship has used "Western esotericism" to refer to "inner traditions"
Esotericism, given all its varied forms and its inherently multidimensional nature, cannot be conveyed without going beyond purely historical information: at minimum, the study of esotericism, and in particular mysticism, requires some degree of imaginative participation in what one is studying

Uhhh, nah brah. Western occultism and mystery religions aren't the only set of esotericists in Western history.
The philosophers, roughly from Plato on (very roughly; it's much harder to get a firm sense with pre-Platonic philosophers, since so many of their writings are fragmentary) wrote in a concealed way for a number of purposes (either the protect themselves from persecution, to protect the city from ideas that could be abused, or to cultivate more philosophically adept students). Their writings were usually guided by the desire to not make their readers worse for having read them.
That changes significantly by Nietzsche, however.
Following link contains quotes from figures throughout history making some mention of esotericism, either for political or pedagogical reasons:
Greek, eudaimonia. This term was employed by Plato and Aristotle to denote true and complete happiness. Its derivation from eu or well, and daimôn, a divinity, a good genius, good fortune, indicates its true signification, as the condition favored by the good genius

There is an intimate, dynamic interplay between mind wandering and metacognition
Metacognition is defined as "cognition about cognition", or "knowing about knowing". It comes from the root word "meta", meaning beyond
Experiments conducted have found remarkable evidence that the heart’s electromagnetic field can transmit information between people. We have been able to measure an exchange of heart energy between individuals up to 5 feet apart. We have also found that one person’s brain waves can actually synchronize to another person’s heart
In short, energetic communication via the heart field facilitates development of an expanded consciousness in relation to our social world
Furthermore, when an individual is generating a coherent heart rhythm, synchronization between that person’s brain waves and another person’s heartbeat is more likely to occur
Another commonality is the role of positive emotions, such as love and appreciation, in generating coherence both in the heart field and in social fields
As individuals within a group increase psychophysiological coherence, psychosocial attunement may be increased, thereby increasing the coherence of social relations
Similarly, the creation of a coherent social field by a group may help support the generation and maintenance of psychophysiological coherence in its individual members

Reality is at a very deep level a set of interrelated and self-referential symbols.
We interpret these symbols and therefore explore reality linked to a set of codes, not all of them are conscious
This compound combines xin 心 "heart; mind; thought; conscience; core" and xiangxu "succeed each other", with xiang 相 "each other; one another; mutual; reciprocal" and xu 續 or 续 "continue; carry on; succeed". Thus it means "thoughts succeeding each other".
Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective
"Humans act toward things on the basis of the meanings they ascribe to those things."
Words occupy a semiotic space. Words are symbols that refer not to things, but to our ideas about things
Most symbolic interactionists believe a physical reality does indeed exist by an individual's social definitions, and that social definitions do develop in part or relation to something "real". People thus do not respond to this reality directly, but rather to the social understanding of reality; i.e., they respond to this reality indirectly through a kind of filters or eyeglasses (perspectives)
