The philosophers, roughly from Plato on (very roughly; it's much harder to get a firm sense with pre-Platonic philosophers, since so many of their writings are fragmentary) wrote in a concealed way for a number of purposes (either the protect themselves from persecution, to protect the city from ideas that could be abused, or to cultivate more philosophically adept students). Their writings were usually guided by the desire to not make their readers worse for having read them.
That changes significantly by Nietzsche, however.
