It's one of the greatest works of literature. If you like it check out his other works and other Russian authors like Tolstoy and Solzhenitsyn.

Like all of Dostohacksky's novels, it's a cheap play disguised as a novel. The characters aren't real, they are only shallow ideas incarnated in lunatics, murderers, holy prostitutes, etc. whose only function is to echo their creator's painfully simple philosophy.
Go and read some real literature, friend.

OP here. I have no idea if there's even such a subreddit. I just noticed that there seems to be a shitty thread devoted to Dostoevsky on here daily, although there didn't happen to be one today so I made one.

I just picked it up the other day too.

Crime and punishment was an incredible read, and Demons took a while to get going (like 100 pages)

As far as philosophical novels go,
Infinite Jest has that going for it, and it wasn't as brutal go get through as Demons.
