Moore's prose isn't nearly as good as his works in comics. Just read any other doorstoper like Don Quixote, tale on the Genji, or hell, even infinite jest and you'll probably get way more (heh) out of it

Do it. He can be overdescriptive and repetitive at times but it's still good shit. Treat the first part as a collection of short stories that set the mood and you'll be in for a ride in the next to parts.
