best travel diary?
Sans Soleil is the finest travellogue ever made. Directed by Chris Marker.
As far as books go:
Patagonia
Rings of Saturn
Dharma Bums
The Great Railway Bazaar is good.

Dharma Bums was so jarring. Kerouac at his most pretentious and deluded.

Enjoyed Montaigne's even if every other page consists of his passing yet another kidney stone!
Lawrence's Sea and Sardinia -and- Etruscan Places qualify, are quality books at any rate. As does Byron's Childe Harold, though a poem, and Wordsworth's Prelude (1805).

I'm reading Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard right now and enjoying it quite a bit. If you're interested in Zen Buddhism or Eastern religion in general it might be worth checking out.

Second the Sans Soleil recommendation.
Other good ones are:
Tristes Tropiques
Egypt Section of Herodotus
VS Naipaul's India Trilogy.
--By the way, anyone read Among the Believers?
Kon Tiki if you want to read about an absolute madman with a death wish.
