In a similar boat but for me it was my dad. I'd recommend looking into childhood ptsd/trauma counseling. If it's affecting dating/romance for you, find a counselor who's also listed as LGBT or at least an ally.

It's hard to say why these things become important years or decades after they happen. I've heard it can be something happening that reminds you of it, or even that you're at a point at which your mind is in a "safe enough time and space" to properly process it. For me my ptsd was triggered when I started dating at 22.

Drinking helps when thinking hurts too much, but there are less addictive things that I hope can be a distraction for you on the reg. Like a pet, maybe? Good luck op, I'm hoping for the best for you.
