Swedish tranny here. That's probably because there is lots of gatekeeping here for people transitioning. Insanely long waiting lists and then after that you still have to have an "investigation" period of at least a year before being able to be prescribed hormones. It's very discouraging to know you'll have to wait years before you can finally transition and I think many can't cope with waiting for something so far off and see offing themselves as their last resort.

Also, though we are pretty "progressive" here, there's definitely still a social stigma against trannies, even more so outside of the large urban centers.
