I made the mistake of using shampoo 2 days in a row before doing a bunch of outdoor shit and I feel like I damaged it a lot. I'd say condition it every time you shower. shampoo about twice a week only when you have to. (I've heard conditioning after shampoo is a good idea but havent tried it)

Shampoo/conditoner every day or so. Fancy conditioner for your hair type every couple of days. Comb when washed, take multivitamins with cod liver oil to make it shiny and healthy, drink plenty of fruit juice for more vitamin C to boost your immune system and keep your hair unstressed.
Don't brush.
Don't blow-dry.
Squeeze the water out by hand, leave to drip/air dry. Maybe use a towel to dry it partially.

Shampoo doesn't need to be daily, but you need to at least wash it with water every day. Shampoo/conditiiner 2-in-1 gives best results for me, and I use head and shoulders to keep dandruff down. Herbal essences conditioner works best for me, as well.
Blowing ambient air at it may be okay, but will cause tangles with non-straight hair.
Get it layered as you grow it out. and then DO NOT CUT IT AGAIN. Do NOT restyle it and cut a bit off and cut a bit off until you're nearly bald. Do NOT dye it, that ruins the structure. Natural colour, leave it to grow.
