Hey legbutts. I want to get hit in the feels. What are some good movies with a gay romance as part of the story?
Here's my recommendations/what I'm talking about:

>Beautiful Thing (1996)
Very cute coming out/coming of age romance. Awesome music, very emotional but also comical.

>I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)
Super hilarious. Also Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey as gay southerners. As heartfelt and sweet as it is crude.

>Holding the Man (2015)
This was sad AS FUCK and wrecked my shit for like a week.
Kind of a must-watch if you like dramatics and romance.

>Cuatro Lunas (2014)
Has 4 nearly unrelated story lines going at the same time, 2/4 of the story lines are pretty good. Wasn't my favorite but I recommend it only because it has average looking guys in love, which is very rare.

>The Way He Looks (2014)
Another coming out/coming of age romance, but with blind people.
I actually preferred the short film to the full movie(I Don't Want to Go Back Alone), but as a fan of the short film I was able to enjoy spending more time with the characters.

>The Normal Heart (2014)
Probably the most intense movie about the start of the AIDS epidemic. Has lots of great monologues and acting and tons of dead boyfriends.
>>
Latter Days is a classic. Typical LA gay guy falls in love with the mormon missionary living next door.

Shelter is easily in my top 3. Its really cute and adorable.

One i personally loved despite the acting being atrocious is Mulligans. Guy goes to friend's lake house for the summer, ends up sleeping with his friends dad. Like i said, the acting is bad at moments, but there are several scenes/lines that were very impactful. Also the dad is hot af.

Oh Happy Day is really cute and adorable, and for once doesn't involve coming out as a plotline.
>>
I enjoyed Cruising (1980) as an old-style whodunit with some decent eye candy if you like masc men, the pacing is decent and the set-pieces are good but I'm not sure how much of that came from my 1970s/80s obsession, which is probably why I would also mention My Beautiful Launderette (1985)

I would second Holding the Man, I found the book overwrought but the film was a much better balance IMO

The Crying Game (1992) is also a good film with a gay twist, I can't say much more because if you haven't seen it I would spoil it, just watch it if you want to know more

Weekend (2011) is a more easygoing film that deals with gay realities rather than some epic romance story, I teared up a little as the final day ticked down

Happy Together (1997) is a great movie about a gay couple from Hong Kong, with beautiful set-pieces that complement a touching romance

I've tried to avoid Brokeback Mountain/ Paris is Burning etc. bc they overshadow otherwise great movies like these
>>
Well I have seen some gay movies and let me tell you, most of them are... not good. [Because most films in general are not good]. I find there are usual pitfalls that make characters very unlikeable or the plot really frustrating to watch (like drama is fine but why is it hard to just leave it at a happy end for most films?)
However here are some of the films I have watched and mah opinion [mind you I am a kissless virgin nerd in my twenties, so tastes might differ]

>Brokeback Mountain (2005)
It's a classic. Watched it once when I was 16 and stayed away from it ever after. Great movie with great screenplay. If you like drama, watch it.

>The Way He Looks (2014)
Typical coming out story with romance, but with a blind protagonist. Makes the plot much more intresting than it actually is. Pure in romance (kissing/hugging) yet very teen in its plot (even with the typical misunderstanding n the middle). It's ok.

>Beautiful Thing (1996)
Watched it when years back so I don't remember much but the film is good for the time it was made it, but has very boring middle parts in it. Comedy is also hit or miss. Probably need to watch it again for an accurate judgement.

>Shelter (2007)
One of my all time favourites. Eventhough it's a coming out story, there is more focus on his dysfuctional life with his sister and her son, which is the main conflict. Very cute, very heartwarming.

>Free Fall (2013)
Conflict is good and the guys are hot, but that's it. Both Protagonists get really unlikeable very fast, the plot just railroads into a relationship based on lust and no emotion. Also a shit ending. Watch it for lulz or hot guys.

>Prayers for Bobby (2009)
Focuses much less on the character coming out, but his religous mother (and family) coming to terms with it (speak, no romance). Very emotional and well written. Also based on a true story (the mother is a well known LGBT advocate).

>Milk (2008)
Something, something politics. Slept through half of it.
>>
I liked the Geography Club.
>>
>>8646768

>Get Real (1998)
Watched it when I was a teenager. Probably got more invested in it than I should have. Typical Nerd loves Jock coming out story. Ending is shit.

>Shortbus (2006)
A bunch of people across the LGBT spectrum having sex and some relationship drama. Weird and confusing and probably wants to be.

>San Junipero (Black Mirror, 2016)
Lesbian couple. It's an epsiode of Black Mirror and thus focuses a lot on societal drama regarding technology. Ends bittersweet, heartwarming or mindnumbing depending on your views of death. Must-watch.

>Kaboom (2010)
College students having sex. Tries to have a plot but fails at it. Possibly a trash movie.

>Lucky Blue (2007)
So mediocore it's forgettable.

And I think that's all? If I didn't mention other movies by name I have watched they were probably very forgettable or I haven't watched them myself.

>Kill Your Darlings.

It's with Daniel Radcliff and Dane DeHann (pic related) and it's pretty good.

>Savage Grace

It has a few gay scenes but the movie has kind of a gay vibe. Also, that end.

And I just saw a movie called Third Star, it's not gay but it has a shiton of bromance. It's fucking sad tho, so beware.

Which of these are 'by straights for straights' and which are not?

We're not going to do your research for you. Google that shit.

>>8647049 here, all of the ones I proposed are unfortunately by straights and for straights. I wish I could propose something better but I don't really have anything else.

Kill your darlings is a true story, so it's more real in a way, but it's still very stylized and romanticized.

Everything there is to know about the Crying Game...
>>
>>8643733
Keep The Light On

Or something like that I can't be bothered to check
Pretty good but slow and very sad.
>>
>>8647139

What? I don't undersand

>>8647060

Just appreciate the characters if you like them, a good film is a good film.

>>8646935

San Junipero I did like because of the anti-tech themes (I'm a luddite), Shortbus is good but felt a little porny to me, glad I've never heard of the last 2 by the sounds of it

I'm waiting for someone to mention either Moonlight (2016), aka vapourwave Precious with a classical soundtrack, or Brokeback Mountain (2005) which is a Mills and Boon novel adapted for the screen. Truly grim viewing.
>>
>>8647131
>all of the ones I proposed are unfortunately by straights and for straights.
That's unfortunate.
>Kill your darlings is a true story, so it's more real in a way
Better that it's a real story.
I'll see if it's anything good.
>>
>>8647162

Someone did mention Brokeback Mountain, I'm a retard

Recommended movies:

> Brotherhood (Broderskab) - 2009
When you fall in love with /pol/.

>Billy's Dad is a Fudge Packer - 2004
Short comedy full of gay jokes

Hors le Murs (Beyond the Walls) - 2012
When you fall in love and he ended up in prison.

Cut Snake - 2015
Not related to Hors le Murs, but it's about a gay guy who got out of prison, and he searched for his prison bitch who got out earlier than him.

>>8646768
>Free Fall
The movie is pretty good though. It made sense. They just met so of course the relationship was based on lust. That's how attractions work. The ending was tragic, but it's also realistic. (spoilers) Not everything has to have a happy ending.

Brotherhood sounds really good, and I'll check Cut Snake. Can second Billy's Dad, it made me laugh.

I forgot to post Skoonheid (2011), a haunting South African film that the synopsis of Brotherhood reminded me of. Sexual tension, secrets, closeted desires etc. mixed with excellent cinematography make for a very uncomfortable (in a good way) watch.

Thanks for the rec, Shelter was pretty cute.
>>
>>8647208
Like I said, tastes might differ. What killed it for me was
a) the cheating,
b) guy A coming on to guy B, eventhough guy B denied intrest anything multiple times
c) guy A stalking guy B
d) the lack of emotions they had in the "relationship" (really felt like they were fuck buddies only)
e) actors seemed to be emotionally stiff (with the exception of guy A's pregnant wife)
>>
>>8648009
>a,b,c) guy A is a biscum
fix'd

>lack of emotion they had in the "relationship"
Stoicism is one of the traits I find appealing in a man, and I think love can be expressed subtly.

But yeah, different strokes for different people. I just wanted to add my two cents about the movie.

I didn't watch too many gay movies, mainly because I found most of them to be formulaic garbage or angst porn. But I liked Happy Together. Beautifully shot /kino/ about a couple of borderlines making each other miserable because they'd take anything over being alone.

FUCK Prayer for Bobby.

I mean, it's an amazing movie and Sigourney Weaver does a BEAUTIFUL job, but fuck, that movie destroys you emotionally

Anybody that does not think Top Gun was a gay love story just because it had a heterosexual romance subplot is in denial.
>>
>>8648896
This is how we get flamers and fems. Straight men are terrified of hanging out with gay men or they'll be seen as gay too.
>>
>>8643733

watched it all day..

The 80s called. They want you to listen to another song.
>>
Can someone explain beautiful thing to me? I always see people recommending it but the movie was slow and boring with uniteresting characters with no pay off.
>>
>>8643733
Years ago i watched this french movie with English subtitles.
It was about two French brothers, one was like a gay chad who went out and fucked guys every night and his younger brother was struggling to come to terms with his sexuality.
Ive tried to find the film but can't remember the name

Are there any movies where the guys are cool? I don't want to watch a coming of age, or guilt trip, or a bunch of fags insecure about their sexuality. I want something with cool guys that are gay.

Griffith is cool.
Togainu no Chi is cool

Chosen from the tv series Chosen is a gay rapper, and the art style is just like Archer's, but it only has 1 season.

Wallace from Scott Pilgrim movie is pretty cool, but he's a supporting character.

Bulat from Akame Ga Kill is one of the main assassins, but he's also just a supporting character.

Your best bet is on comics like DC's Midnighter or Marvel's Hulkling and Wiccan, or video games like Fallout: New Vegas.

>>The Way He Looks
HE IS BLIND REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>8649819
Wallace is awesome. And people have described me as the character Joseph too. And with Stephen being gay Young Neil is the only one of Scott's friends that didn't at least make out with someone of the same sex
>>
>>8643733
>>The Normal Heart (2014)
fuck that, it is painful to watch
>>
free fall is my favourite
>>
>>8650160
blind people can be gay too, heartless fag
>>
>>8647213
Seconding adam and steve. I love this movie.
>>8649710
Adam and Steve and Oh Happy Day are the only two movies i can think of where coming out isnt a plotline. Both are silly and cute (especially adam and steve). Oh happy day is more realistic.

I also recommend watching Looking. Its an HBO series with a movie that serves as the series finale. Its a wonderful show that explores gay themes but is so far beyond coming out or society oppression of gays. Its just....gay dudes dealing with life issues. I very much enjoyed watching it.

breakfast with scot. weird but enjoyable movie
