Religions justify inequalities with ideology and provide imaginary social cohesion amid conflict. They're only peaceful if you believe peace is achieved with the mind and not through social movements.
That said, monotheistic religions have been pretty important for western philosophy and the formulation scientific method, but they're pretty useless now.
