I assumed it had to do with them being canonically brothers more then homophobia.
Also yeah >>8491124 is right. adding on, some people like the idea of reclaiming a slur, and so they use queer, the ones that don't or that find it offensive use lgbt

Because some people (cishet women) want to be lgbt as well, but aren't.
So instead they adopted "queer" as some illegitimate identity, meaning they can pretend to be lgbt without actually facing lgbt difficulties, expectations or responsibilities.

Queer in the 'normal' use of the weird just means abnormal. Which is why it fits as a replacement term for LGBT.
However, straight white women have started calling themselves genderqueer - and they're a powerful group so some LGBT groups have started renaming themselves LGBTQ to include them, but they play it off as 'also meaning intersex, pansexual, etc'.

So basically, a lot of intra-group politics going on.
