Well if you haven't even interacted outside of school then keeping it simple and going out as friends could be a good start. Labelling it as a date right off the bat does put you in the position of being rejected or accepted outright.

I flamed out of college too but due to words from my stepdad I stayed longer smashing my head against a wall and failing half of my classes despite me knowing I had serious problems that just saying, "No, this isnt real" wouldnt fix. I wish I could have left that place earlier but oh well.
