Usually it's just a once-off thing with no actual broader social implications, which bothers me.

That's why I liked the gay guy in Dragon Age 2. Because his being gay actually affected his life in some way instead of just happening in this hypothetical world where there is no such thing as homophobia (even though the world is based on medieval Europe).

I find funny that people that try to give a LGBT angle to P4 given that modern Persona pretty much hates gays.

The only video games I'm into are teen angst games (Beyond Two Souls, Life is Strange, Until Dawn). Also those where you can customize your character like Fallout.

Naoto is a pretty difficult character for most western consumers to really get because naoto's presentation is explicitly tied not to matching her self perception but the greater cultural perception -- that she wants to be who she is and has aspirations that are much less common for women in Japan and sometimes discouraged and so she conducts and presents herself more in a way to fit what she aspires towards based on culture. I don't think that means you can't make an interpretation she could be FTM or transmasculine or whatever, but I think a lot of people give the persona series more credit for being, I guess, "progressive" on LGBT matters when in my opinion that isn't what it is.

She really isn't, she explains the issue in the game pretty clearly. The police force is mostly male, the detectives she admired are male, so she turns herself into a boy because she's too afraid to live as a woman.

People just want to see what's not there, looking for representation that doesn't exist. Kanji is the same issue, even if you can argue he may have been bi, it's obviously the whole character was written so straight boys felt safe because phew, he liked a girls.

Definitely agree. Which it's weird because I think old Atlus could be more fairly progressive, just look at Jenna Angel in DDS.
