Well, I started self-medding at the end of 2013. At six months HRT, I already had a passing voice and a couple laser sessions done so I went full-time.
Went legit for HRT around the 1 year mark. Was pretty much done with laser at that point.
Had SRS and a bit of FFS 30 months into my transition. Which allowed me to get 100% coverage for the rest of trans related medical expenses.
I'm now getting electrolysis to clean up what laser didn't get me rid of, working on my singing voice with a speech therapist and planning to get more extensive FFS later this year. Still waiting on my full ID change to go to court because the process in this country is completely retarded.

All of that would have been much, much slower if I hadn't taken my transition in my own hands instead of going through gatekeeping hoops.

I was 35. Resumed transitioning after a fifteen years interruption.
I didn't even bother going through gatekeepers this time around because I'm still pissed at them for denying me treatment when I was 18 by saying I was "too young", but basically, they make you wait for years for anything, have a fucked up idea of priorities and prevent you from getting anything done on your own (like getting laser early) if you enter their sadistic little game.
ID change until last summer required having a lawyer go to court for you and had permanent sterilization (that is, SRS) as an absolute prerequisite. Law changed, decrees weren't published until this spring so all requests were put on hold anyway. Now I don't need a lawyer but I'm waiting for a reply from the judge's office to know when my case can be scheduled. It's managed by the same courts who judge familial matters, and they consider ID change requests are a much lower priority than divorces and related bullshit, so...
As for the public insurance coverage, legal fees aren't covered, but everything medical is. HRT, surgeries, hair removal, voice therapy, shrink sessions... Since I didn't go through gate keeping, getting access to that level of coverage was a bit more complicated, but they couldn't really deny it once I got SRS. I postponed FFS and electrolysis because I didn't feel it was urgent enough to fork that much money out of my own pocket when I could get it for free further down the line.
