I reaaaaally want to make a game and have done for a while since I feel like I have a decent idea but I feel it's super ambitious for one person.

So you know in survival games there's always an infinite number of enemies even if it doesn't really make sense such as due to a closed environment?
Well the idea I had was something like a narrative heavy game with a finite number of enemies. Possibly Zombie-esque, but mainly important part is they were once human.
As a result depending on your performance throughout the game and the choices you make your experience would change as the number of people you fail to save hurts you since they come back and try to kill you, plus since they're originally portrayed as humans and not just generic NPCs, there's also the motive to save people because you like/dislike them based on their backstories.

Setting could be challenging as you'd need somewhere closed off and isolated, both to set the atmosphere and to make sure that the enemies/allies were a fixed number.
Perhaps something sorta like dead space where you're on a ship, encounter a nasty alien thing and then stuff goes to shit.
If you've ever played The Thing game, then you'd possibly know what I mean when I'd like to aim for some of the mechanics of that. Maybe at first infected humans don't act any different, and only change and attack you if you try to kill them. Would end up leading to paranoia and then there'd be the times where you wrongly kill an innocent person and then have to deal with the consequences and fallout.

I do think it would have the potential to be awesome, but it seems like way beyond me.

I don't like it, but I think you'd need to have a auto balancer for difficulty dependent on how many enemies there already are.

For example you can hardly play it slow and try to play it perfectly and being some expert detective if each infected person infects another person at an accelerating rate. After all, the more infected there are the more chances there'd be for them to infect a new victim, so things would go to shit fast.
Then again this could be argued to be a good thing as the longer the game goes on the worse the themes of paranoia and stuff gets to the point where your character pretty much goes insane and murders everyone.
Multiple endings would likely be a thing so I can see that being an obvious candidate for one of them.

Now that I think about it, using map design to create funnels and chokepoints might make the infection spread in a way that is fairer to respond to.
So, for exaple, the areas in which you found survivors that aren't infected are probably safe, and the areas where infection is coming from are most likely lost, but the areas beyond that that you can't have access unless you go through the infection are anyone's guess.

Multiple ending depending on agression/lack of level and number of people saved sounds pretty sweet too.

8 months, and this happened once before where I reached a break point, but also other factors ended up in hospital blah blah. Or once people realise that there's an infection on the loose then they'd engage in behaviour that'd make getting infected harder.
Like at first obviously no one is going to carry a weapon or be suspicious of other people, but that could change and would offset the increased infection rate. Someone who's unarmed will be a lot harder to overpower for example, and if people are less trusting of each other then it'll be harder to be caught alone.

Rogue like vs structured is a very good question though.
Due to a lot of the game being dependent on paranoia and not knowing who to trust, save scumming would likely be an actual issue but at the same time you wouldn't want to make it too hard for players to drop in and out as they desire.
Ultimately I feel like it'd have to be left up to the player. If they don't want the full experience that's on them, and certain players want different things.
Some players might want to have a permadeath run for immersion reasons, as then they're playing how they would if they were actually in the situation, there'd be no "ah well I screwed up that fight but at least now I know I can't trust that NPC". But of course that's not for everyone and some people could get frustrated if they died in a dumb way and lost hours of progress.

You would want a potentially long campaign though to allow players to talk and converse with NPCs, as that'd reinforce that they are human and add weight to choices and stuff.
If there was no real interaction with the NPCs then it'd be less of "Oh god I didn't save them" and more "Urgh another enemy".

Plus there's the fact that in order for all this to work you'd need well written and compelling characters, and that in itself is hard. Having too many characters would hurt the quality of writing which you could have, plus if the crew is small and the characters have individual special roles, then losing/saving certain people would matter massively in terms of certain events that could happen.

I meant in a way that the (ex)crewmembers are still the big/important enemies. Killing/saving them is still the important decision.
The spawn are more of a pressure applier and padding for a small crew to still be dangerous, and since the more people are infected the more of them there are, that means that you are more prompt to paranoia as you know there's a lot of hosts and there'll probably be even more of them soon if you don't do something but can't really be sure of who to kill.

That's the thing though, enemies for the sake of enemies ruins suspense I feel.
If you played the dead space franchise, the first was really good at suspense because there were periods of just no action or enemies.
You'd wander around the ship at times, all alone, with no allied interaction, no enemies, no nothing.
You'd be sure that something was about to jump out since you were in a section where there was blood all over the walls, corpses on the ground and dark corners for stuff to potentially jump out of. But then nothing would come, and you'd remember those sections and it'd make you unsure in future of whether to trust the silence as something could potentially jump out at you but you couldn't be sure in advance.
It was excellent, and really helped to set the atmosphere.

Then they made the sequels progressively more action oriented with more enemies and it took the games from suspenseful horror to generic action.
There's a billion generic action games, if I were to do it I'd want it to be something special. Good horror seems to be something that's lacking nowadays, and I think that if you could come up with a well polished horror game that plays more to suspense and paranoia than just action and jumpscares, it'd do really well.

And yeah, it is a bit strange to talk about in a place like this, but idk yeah. Someone mentioned games and it made me remember the concept I really want to work on and play and I just posted about it.
I don't even care if someone steals the idea, I *really* want to play such a game, and since I feel like it'd potentially be really good if executed properly, I'd be remisced if it never got made.
